Bean+ and s button blinking in alternation

My machine broke a few days ago, water was running through instead of coffee, despite it still grinding the beans. So it seems something is wrong with the brewing unit. I tried taking it apart (with help of all the great guides on here) and checked the drainage valve, cleaned the machine and took the brewing unit out and ran cold water through it. Nothing seems to have helped and now when I plug it in, the ‘bean+’ button and ‘s’ button blink in alternation and it doesn’t react to me pressing any button. I noticed that I couldn’t really seem to click the brewing unit properly into place (although I lock the handle, I can still pull it out). Do I have to connect the brewing unit to the water supply somehow? Many thanks for the help!

Thank you very much for your reply! Unfortunately we don’t have a second brewing unit. I tried checking the drainage valve as I thought it was that at first, but it seems to be in fine order after I cleaned it.

I found out that the bean+ and s lights were only blinking because the brewing unit sensor wasn’t clicked in properly, now the lighting seems like the machine is back to normal but when you press to make a coffee, the original problem remains, which is the water dripping out of the machine and no coffee running through. It smells like coffee has been brewed though which is confusing, so water is going into the brewing unit but leaking somewhere in the next steps.

Is there a second brewing unit somewhere that could be used for testing? Some possible issues: clogged flowmeter, clogged heater, broken drainage valve…

So my guess is a broken "bridge” in the top of the brewing unit, as seen in Siemens Kaffeeautomaten Brühgruppe revidieren, step 6. Check it out by pulling out the drip tray and taking out the upright wall (bezel). You probably will need plenty of force. Put the tray back in, now without the wall. Now you can see if the coffee is really dripping from above. If so, replace the bridge. Hope it helps!

I had a similar problem too on my surpresso A53009 (which is quite similar inside). to find my leak I had to disassemble the machine, to eventually find out the cause of the leak was accessible without such surgery. it came from the fact the expansion box (in step 7 of the guide) had piled up so much powder that it clogged, causing an O-ring on the valve just before it to leak due to overpressure.

(However, upon reassembling everything I do get the blinks from bad contacts. Haven’t managed to get rid of it yet)
