wont unlock if I have the ear speaker plugged in

So i was replacing the screen on a iphone x, when i was testing the phone after replacing the screen i noticed that when it would boot up and when i would put in the correct passcode to unlock the phone, the screen froze and just restarted, but heres the twist, if i dont plug in the ear speaker, the long flex connected from the screen to the motherboard, the phone boots up and when i put in the password it unlocks perfectly and i can use it fine, ofc without the ear speaker and face id working, but its a customers phone and i need some help, i also did examine the flex and everything, nothing was damaged, this also is happening to an iphone 11 i was repairing and i havent seen it happen over the hundreds of iphone x’s and iphone 11’s ive done, if someone can please help that would be amazing!

The ear speaker component contains a few different modules; the ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, ear speaker, top/front-facing microphone, and FaceID sensor. If just one of them were damaged during the transfer, it may cause a short which will cause the device to malfunction (freeze or reboot). In your case, based on when this symptom arises, I’m inclined to say that the FaceID sensor might have been damaged. It makes sense for iOS to attempt a FaceID scan during the unlock process, which is when your customer’s phone bricks.

Before deeming it a bad unit, I would definitely verify that the board connection is free of any dust or debris that may be obstructing it by re-seating the flex, and follow that with a hard reset. If you’re still in trouble, I would then test a known-good ear speaker component and check for the original symptom. If the known-good resolves the issue, the original part was damaged in some way unfortunately.

so this is now the iphone 11 issue im having because i was able to resolve the x thanks again. So I booted the phone into DFU mode and plugged it into 3uTools, as we are trying to set the phone up, the phone 1 doesn't show any available wifi network connections, and i inspected the board and made sure everything was plugged in properly, and i even reattached everything, so as i was saying when we go through the setup, it wont let me connect to wifi so it says to setup through cell service , so i click that and it says give us a few minutes to activate this phone, and 5 min later the phone shuts off automatically and reboots, i even tried to activate it through the tool in 3uTools and still same result, so i took the sim card out and tried to set it up with itunes, well when i go to do that, in itunes it just says iphone and the device isnt getting recognized, i even tried known good usb cords, still does the same thing, waits about 5 min then the device reboots again, any ideas?

Well, having activation issues raises many eyebrows. It sounds like the phone is in setup and doesn't have any data on it, so I would first rule out any software issues by updating and restoring the device, then try activating again.

the issue is tho, i cant activate it since while its "activating" before its done the phone just reboots

@zmentz right, so you will have to boot the iPhone into Recovery Mode and attempt to restore/update from there. You will need a PC with the latest version of iTunes installed, or a fully updated Mac.

I've tried that, sadly nothing has been working, we cant even install the latest version of itunes and set it up as a new phone, because the phone just wants to keep rebooting after sometime during the activation process that it requires because the device wont let you set up via wifi and itunes, so cellular was the only available option and still same issue, just reboots after sometime, attempting to restore/update or set up as a new phone doesn't work, itunes is updated on my pc to the latest version and when the phone is plugged in and i go to itunes it just says Iphone with no options nor the little iphone symbol near the top left that you would click on to go to the device, I inspected the board itself for a few hours checking everything, for shorts, missing components, everything you could think of , i think its a cpu/nand short and that its unrepairable, if theres anything im not doing just let me know on any other ideas or thoughts but this has been the hardest repair ive done in a while. @pineauc

Did you test and confirm FaceID and the earspeaker were working before you opened it up? I’m wondering if there’s a short somewhere in the assembly that’s causing these issues.

i was thinking it was a cpu/nand short and i also wasnt able to test it because the screen was so badly damaged i couldnt test anything and i didnt have a test screen , because we only had one in stock

@ZackAttack in my shop, I do a functionality test before I attempt any repair in front of every customer and send them a copy of the results. I do it to protect both me and the customer. If I damage something, I know that I am liable and will fix the issue. But if I can't test all of the features of a device that has severe damage or no signs of life, I'm not liable because we can't confirm they're working. A service agreement is also sent to them that states that as well. So you might be stuck between a hard place and a rock.
