Can I replace a bad logic board with a board from another model?

I want to replace the bad logic board on this machine. Can I use a board from an older or newer MacBook? My current MacBook is the Core 2 Duo one with a 2.16 GHz processor.

Thanks for the answer. I was given this machine and took it to the apple store and was told the motherboard was bad. It appeared to the tech that there could have been liquid spilled on it, though he was not sure. The unit will not turn on at all.

Do you know how the bad motherboard was determined? What did you see them do? How busy were they?

The MacBook is 13" 2.16ghz. No I did not see them test it. The tech took it to the backroom for about 15 - 20 minuets and came back with the results.

I clicked the link to the replacement board in your answer & mine does not have the energy star label. Also the picture is different. The manufacturing date on mine at the ram slot is 2006, the board on the link is 2007.

Thanks agian

I'll vote one up on this question cause if I was in the same position than Gerald I would try to find the fastest mobo compatible with my machine since he has to replace it. I'm not a MacBook specialist so I can't try an answer on this but I'm sure Ben Eisenman will have one for Gerald.

You have a 2.16 GHz Mid 2007 MacBook. Unfortunately, you cannot use a logic board from a newer machine, because they changed almost all the connectors to JST connectors in the next revision (Late 2007/Santa Rosa).

If you do actually have a non-energy star board, you can use the 1.83 or 2.0 GHz Late 2006 non-energy star boards, or the 2.0 or 2.16 GHz Mid 2007 non-energy star boards (any of the boards represented here). The only way I am aware of to ascertain whether or not it is energy star is to remove the upper case and see if it says "Energy Star" in the right RAM slot area.

You can't switch logic boards without a lot of difficult changes, for the most part it is impossible. It's much easier and wiser to just get the right part to start off with. There's no reason to ask for problems. Logic board failures are rare and you sure that's the problem? Maybe we can help you diagnose the problem if you tell us what's happening. Or you can just buy the logic board here:
