Whirlpool WRS555SIHZ00 not making ice

I have a Whirlpool Side-by-Side (exact model in Title) and the ice maker stopped working but the water pressure appears to be adequate. I have tried a couple things already…

1) checked the on/off switch (it was on, still not working)

2) checked water pressure - appears to be okay

3) filter was changed about 1 month and half ago

4) took out the ice that was in the tray (no blockages that would be causing it not to drop ice in the bin)

5) took the bin and ice maker out completely and checked for any frozen components (none found)

6) minimal ice build up on water tube that dispenses into the maker (cleared out)

7) removed water filter (recommended elsewhere to see if the filter was clogged, not sure if this will help or not)

That is pretty much all I have been able to do so far. I do not hear any noises or anything coming from the maker at all. I don't want to condemn the ice maker yet, especially if it may be something else. Any ideas?

Thanks!

How deep does the ice go into the water line? Mine made a 1/2 tray of ice & that was it. Ran the hair dryer on low speed & heat - will go longer with it again.

I just did the "hairdryer" method yesterday ... today .. I have a half bin full of ice ... no need to take anything apart .... just remove the ice bin and heat the tray for 5 or 10 minutes ... you'll feel the heat coming out the above vent ... it'll take a few hours see any results but this worked for me ....

I have the exact Whirlpool refrigerator and am having the same problem with the ice maker. What is happening is that the water tube that feeds into the ice tray gets frozen shut. To fix it, first remove the ice cube container, next turn the ice maker switch to off, then remove the 4 screws that hold the cover on, then gently pull the cover partially off (there will be some wires that are connected, so be careful). Then blow a hair dryer on high heat into the black water tube until the ice melts (you will not see the ice chunk since it is up inside the black tube). Re assemble the ice maker and turn back on. It may take a couple of hours for the ice maker to cycle through before it starts filling the ice cube tray again. This has happened multiple times to my ice maker. I will be contacting Whirlpool about this issue.

I have the same unit and same problem, worst refrigerator I have owned. Had a Samsung and the ice maker never had a problem for 14 years running. This Whirpool from day one dropped once onto the floor randomly all day, ice in the bid forms a big frozen ball every other month and requires it to be emptied not the ice machine stopped working. Unit only 15 months old! Sad shoddy product hope they go out of business.

i bought 4 of these for my rentals, and so far 3 have had the freezer doors replaced under warranty. now the 4th quit, and i'm 1 year past warranty. the water tube heating element is embedded in the foam in the door. so unless you cut the plastic and foam, you have to replace the door, which costs around $1000 just to buy the door. this is obviously a serious design flaw, and whirlpool has no other fix. not happy.

I had this same issue and I appreciate the easy fix. The hair dryer worked perfectly and saved me a service call. Thank you.

Ours just turned 2 yrs old, almost to the date and now we are having the same issue of the ice maker not working. What a shame. Shame on Whirlpool!!!!

4 screws doesn't remove a plate, the whole freezer unit is 1 piece. What cover are you referring to?

I’ve had the same issue with this model off & on since purchase in Oct/2018 and the unit was replaced while under warranty. Problem continues. Tried the hair dryer suggestion and it worked….I could see the ice formation at the base of the black water tube.

This is an obvious design defect and I’m going to write Whirlpool to see if there’s any response.

Good luck with that. I have same exact issue, bought mine November 2018. Out of warranty so it's a service call with up front charge then parts and labor. I haven't tried hair dryer method yet but will be doing that to hopefully get it working again.

From what I remember, you only see a small amount of water exit the tube. Two or three minutes with the hair dryer should be plenty of time, then hook everything back together and see if it works. I have been lucky in that my ice maker has not frozen up again for awhile, but I have been using quite a bit of ice during the summer months. I think the secret may be to keep the ice maker making ice.

I definitely wouldn’t use a hair dryer, if it’s going to be a constant problem and a simple fix to thaw the ice in the tube get a small steamer, that won’t melt or warp the plastic. Not sure it’s worth spending $1000 to replace the door due to poor engineering when you can just thaw it every now and then. I have been repairing appliances for 12 years, the small steamer is definitely the way to go and very quick.

If your ice maker fill tube is icing over that is because your inlet water valve is bypassing. You need to replace the inlet water valve, defrost your fill tube, and your problem is solved.

Thank for that added repair idea. I assume the inlet valve is in the door somewhere, since tap water is always available. Took a long time to find anything on repairing a complete WP icemaker-in-the-door. Haven't found a video yet.

I had the same issue and tried the same corrective actions with no success. I emptied the ice bin, shut the ice maker off and unplugged the refrigerator. After 10 minutes I plugged it back in and turned the ice maker and within 4 hours it was making ice again. It is working fine now. I think somehow the ice maker gets out of sequence and by unplugging it you are resetting it and is restarts the sequence.

UPDATE!!! Hair Dryer worked! I aimed it at area where the ice is made as well as the vent/shoot where the ice comes through. It seems to have worked. They need to sell blowdryers with the product for future freeze ups...in the freezer LOL

I am having the same problem. It seems like whenever I replace the water filter it does this. It usually starts back making ice within 12 hours but now...nothing. I can't take the panel off because the lines are in side the door. My ice maker stopped working within 2 months of receiving new appliance. It is now barely 3 years. Bad product. A lot of people having issues with this. Not sure what else do to. Unplugged, removed filter (waiting for new filter to come incase somehowe line got clogged), I refuse to spend $1000 for a new door. Would rather get new appliance that has better reviews. Any other suggestions???

Hello everyone,

First I want to thank everyone for sharing the fixes for our refrigerators. My model number is WRX735SDHZ02.

I encourage you to contact Whirpool and let them know what is going on with your refrigerator. It's ridiculous that we have to use a blow dryer to get our ice maker to work and can be unsafe. Here goes the link, https://www.whirlpool.com/services/conta....

If you live in California and after you contact Whirlpool and they do nothing. I suggest you follow the link below to California Consumer Self-Help - Tips & Resources to Resolve Consumer Complaints,

I bought the same one 2 years ago from Lowes (plus an extended warranty) and had the same problem several times that their designated repair people couldn’t fix. They said the cost of a new door was as much as a new unit so they gave me a similar fridge (GE) and told me I could keep the old one, which I put in the basement as a backup. I get the sense that there is some type of design defect in the door. Good luck!

I fixed mine once with the hair dryer. It’s stopped again. I noticed the cold air from the freezer is ducted directly at the water feed tube. This time I’m going to try and put some foam insulation around the water feed area, and maybe re-aim the incoming cold air down towards the ice maker section - if possible & I can figure it out. Sad to have a fairly new fridge with a working ice maker that just freezes up.

You don't possibly have pictures of the water feed line? Not sure where this is. You're right - ridiculous to have a new fridge with this idiot problem. I'm about to just buy an ice maker for the counter to keep the bin full. I'm so aggravated with this piece of junk.

I've had 6 of these fridges with fill lines freezing. The heating element burns out. See pic. It's wrapped around the water line. You pretty much have to destroy the door and foam to get to it. If you're careful, you can cut this out so that it doesn't show if you put icemaker cover back on. From there, if you can find the same heating element? I couldn't. I was thinking remove the foam against the outer steel skin, so that the outside temp heats up the water line. Then put new foam to cover hole. Just haven't tackled this yet.

UPDATED!

Circa January 2022: Our Whirlpool Model WRS555SIHZ03 refrigerator was new in August 2020, purchased at Lowe’s, with 5-year extended warranty. I’d say within a year ago, the icemaker stopped making ice the first time. I noticed that someone in the house fat-fingered the front Control Panel, causing the freezer compartment temperature to be DECREASED to the COLDEST setting!? What I did to fix this problem: 1) Set the freezer temp on the Control Panel to the WARMEST setting (one bar). 2) Cleared the frost from the Shut Off Arm. 3) Cycled the On/Off Switch, and the Storage Bin Sensor Switch. This apparently was enough, after 15-30 minutes, to thaw an apparent blockage in the Supply Line, according to other reports here. I heard the water supply begin to flow again to the ice maker. Soon the first batch of ice was dumped into the empty Storage Bin. By late, late evening, the Storage Bin had an ample supply. By the morning, the Bin was full and the Shut Off Arm was again regulating the cycling of the icemaker. I then reset the freezer temp to the “checked value” (3 bars). Victory!

March 27th, 2002: This week of March 23rd, 2022, the ice Storage Bin was empty once again! Once again, the freezer compartment temp had somehow been decreased to a value lower then the “checked value” on the Control Panel. There is no build-up of frost or icing around the Shut Off Arm this time. I am currently in the midst of shooting this recurring trouble, and will attempt: 1) Resetting the ice maker using the On/Off Switch (Off for at least 10 minutes), and 2) CAREFULLY thawing the area with a hair dryer. I don’t see a Black Supply Line anywhere, but I’ll still try it. Wish me luck!

June 18th, 2022: It's taken me several weeks to catch up to write this, but Circa April 2022, for a couple of weeks after setting the freezer to the proper temp as above, I tried resetting the icemaker power as suggested by the article on The Ice Making Hub (How To Reset Whirlpool Ice Maker), but without success. I could NOT hear the flow of water into the icemaker, and did not restore the flow of ice cubes into the Storage Bin.

I then determined to use my wife's hair dryer ON LOW HEAT SETTING to gently warm things up around the icemaker and behind the fascia covering it. With the Storage Bin removed and Power Button (rocker switch) turned off, I directed warm air upwards over the icemaker assembly itself, until no more frost or water droplets remained. I also directed warm air through the louver in the fascia into which chilled air flows over the icemaker assembly to make ice. I guess I did this for 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, I again cycled the power button. Then, I waited.

LO, AND BEHOLD, within 20 or 30 minutes, the flow of ice cubes into the Storage Bin began again. Slowly at first, but then a regular avalanche of cubes, filling the Bin within a few hours. This icemaker, when on its game, sounds like river stones being thrown against a metal barn! I started the resetting process with the freezer temp on 1 bar, and have raised it to 2 bars for several weeks. I'm shy of raising it to the checked value of 3 bars, but may do so since, at this time of year, the temperature in the house is warm enough to perhaps warrant doing so. Leaving it at 2 bars may not slow down the rate of making ice, even with a warm house, but we'll see. We use a lot of ice at our house. Again, Victory!

I'm in the same boat. Remove the ice bin, then the 4 screws and the cover/trim will wiggle loose, unplug the connector to the on/off switch, then fully remove the cover/trim. You'll see the end of the water line & trough that feed water to the tray. Problem is the freezer air duct blows directly on all this. = a bad design. I'm going to try some air re-direction or insulation to keep the strong cold air off the water area. May not work - but I'm going to try. I've done the hair dryer twice.

完成的

I've done the change water filter, hair dryer and then unplug for 10 minutes and so far still no ice being made.

I have noticed that the ice shut off arm is all the way up which would I think shut off ice making because the bin was full and pressed up on this arm.

It does not want to be pulled back down and I don't want to pull harder and maybe break something. It seems to be part of the same box that flips the tray over when Ice is dumped into the bin.

Has anyone else had this problem with the shut off arm "stuck" in the up (off) position?

完成的

Since yesterday, after the filter change, hair dryer and unplugging actions, the ice maker has come on twice very briefly and made about 20 ice cubes. The shut off arm remains stuck in the up(off) position.

Apparently water does flow if it makes 20 cubes.

I am considering replacing the entire ice maker unit. I found it online for about $65.00.

完成的

@sclendenin If I am reading the other commenters' contributions correctly, the ice maker unit is not the problem. The problem is the heating element for the fill tube burning out, which allows the fill tube to freeze up, plugging up the water supply to the ice maker unit. (See 93typhoon above.)

If someone could design and manufacture a replacement heating element, or even find a good one for purchase, and then figure an effective and economical way to replace the original with it, one might be able to make a pretty fair rate of return supplying them to owners of this frig, or to repair men/repair women.

My shut off arm is also in the up position & I don’t know how to get it back down. It had been down until I took the ice bin out to check the on/off switch. Any solutions for lowering the arm?

If it's an indoor ice maker good luck. Mine constantly has problems clearing ice. Worst engineering of an icemaker. Also if it stops with no ice for a while check the wiring at base of freezer door. They like to brake. It also like to fill the lower cavity where the motor is for the ice dispenser and freeze it up as well. At this point just happy to have water

After sitting for about two weeks doing nothing the ice maker suddenly started working again. The only thing I had done, or was able to do, was to turn down the freezer temperature to just two bars. Even after that adjustment it was about two weeks and then all of a sudden it works again.

My only thoughts are that the "warmer" freezer setting unfroze something or it was/is just some sort of intermittent switch failure. The arm that I beleive is supposed to hang dwon into the ice bin until rising ice pushes it up and stops ice production has remained stuck all the way up throughout this whole time and is all the way up right now. the thing just continues to work.

Baffled.

完成的

I actually was able to fix mine twice since my last post. I took the bin out, removed the four screws and removed/disconnected that piece to get to the black supply line. I held a hair dryer to that until I some water dribbled out. Kept it going for about ten minutes after that. It works again for now at least.

Also the problem will decrease if you put the freezer on its warmest temp (1). It now happens very rarely. (And my kids soda's don't explode when he forgets them in the freezer! The ice and everything in the freezer are still frozen solid and it probably uses less electricity! Now I only need the hair dryer a couple times a year! Win/win/win.

it seems there should be a class action lawsuit in the making against whirlpool. the wiring problem at the bottem of the freezer door could be a fire hazard and possible electrocution could. happen.

if you decide to repair the problem. the freezer door will need to be replaced for over 1000.00. this is the second whirlpool replacement in the last 2 years. the ice maker stopped working recently just a few days out of warranty on the replcement refrigerator. the wiring at the bottem of the door can not be bent back and forth. they will fail. sham on you whirlpool and your complete failures with no disregard for quality. you should just close your doors and end the misery that you put your customers and your selves through.
