Firecuda clone will not boot

I have a Late 2015, 21.5” iMac, EMC 2833. I bought a 2.5” SATA 6Gb/s 2TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD and now have problems installing it.

I cloned my Hard Drive on the iMac to the new FireCuda using Acronis. I have tried to boot up twice, performing two different cloning operations and it will not boot up.

The cloning operation states “cloning was successful.” I placed the drive inside the iMac, replacing the old HD, it did not boot. I tried to boot externally following the Apple recovery procedures, it will not boot.

In both scenarios, the boot screen comes on with the Apple logo, the status bar fills up all the way, then that’s it. I left it there over night once - Nothing. I used Disk Utility to scan/repair it. Disk Utility said it is operating normally. I can use Finder to open the disk and get files from it, no problem.

Does anyone know what could be wrong. It did format as APFS. Also, there is another clue. I tried the cloning recovery procedure using the Apple Disk Utility procedure, twice. Both times it failed. Disk Utility will not make a clone. What am i missing? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Albert

Cloning really doesn’t work anymore.

Now this is according to the Mac OS you are using. Let’s go there first so we know how to format it.

Then install a system. This will give you the repair partition. Now you boot from that drive and use Migration Assistant to move your Apps and user data.

Sadly, cloning is not reliable! We just don't use it any more with HFS+ and then APFS adds a mess as well, as there is now two different variations of it! APFS is a moving target as its still under change.

Stick with Apples own tools in this case during the OS install process at the very end you'll be given the option to migrate your old system over. If you don't, you can get to it going to the Utility folder finding Migration Assistant app there.

While Apple aims you to use it for moving your stuff from one system to another. In fact, you can use it to recover from a TimeMachine or even an external drive or a system which is put into Target Disk Mode! Unlike Cloning Migration Assistant is about to move the user accounts over as well as does a file copy of each file so you know the file is not fragmented and as its also doing a file CRC check you know if its damaged (unlike cloning apps).

I haven't used a mac cloning app in over 10 years now! I still use a windows version though when I need to.

Hi, thank you for your replies. I used a cloning software last time. So I am done with those. I will try the process you are recommending. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do any of the processes you are talking about. So how do I install a system on to the new HD? Do you mean Mojave? That is what is on my Mac now. How do I do that? is there a tutorial you can point me to? Thanks, again.

@danj Even in Windows it's iffy, especially on recovery partition systems. Sometimes you don't get it depending on how the vendor set it up.

HP does it in such a way that the files are hidden so well there's no good way to force them into being visible (that said, it does tend to expose the files in a Linux based tool, or commercial like True Image. I'd be weary of a WinPE tool, since it's likely to block them there as well), so you may not get the partition back with a clone. It's better to use the recovery media or make it if it's still available on systems like that where and migrate the files unless the media is bad. It's fine on systems that leave it all available for access unprotected, but protected partitions are a gamble... You'll only hear about it when they need it and expect you to bail them out for missing it.

I'm done with cloning in general on Windows unless the files are visible.
