No sound at all (not even startup chime)

So, I have a Macbook A1342 that produces absolutely no sound at all. There’s no startup chime and no speakers are listed in the input/output devices menu. The headphone jack does not work either. As I plug the headphone jack into the port, I can hear some noise (crackling or something), but that’s about it. Macbook does not recognise it.

This seems to be a hardware issue as I’ve done OS reinstall and taken battery out (as it was replaced) to no avail. I am just wondering how badly damaged it is and whether or not it’s fixable without too much fuss (i.e. don’t need to re-solder anything).

I suspect the audio chip/codec is damaged. Is there a way to check what exactly has gone wrong with it?

I know the easiest fix is to just buy a USB audio adaptor. However, I am curious what’s gone wrong in the Macbook and if there’s a fix for it.

There’s no easy fix for that, everything is firmly soldered to the board as far as audio is concerned. I’d be careful buying any adapter, as there’s no sound on speakers and headphone, sound may just not be available to any device as it’s not elaborated at all. Used boards for these Macs are nowadays very cheap..I’d see a logic board replacement as the best solution.

I bought one of those a while ago: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Speake...

Tried it and sound worked OK through speakers and headphones. Only issue with it is having it plugged in prevents me from plugging anything in the second USB port as the adapter gets in the way.

Guess it's either invest in a better USB audio adapter or replace logic board.

@hardstylez122 I didn't expect the adapter to be that cheap, but it makes sense being that simple and if it doesn't bother you using it, a small Usb hub might be a decent answer giving you additional room. iFixit seems to have the 2.26Ghz board for abt 30$, so you've got budget choices at hand.
