Optical Drive master repair

I've read that large dvd players and cd players have something called a potentiometer in them that adjust the power of the laser being beemed to the disc. I have a optical drive that sometimes will read a good dvd movie never a burned one , I tried cleaning the lens carefully and did'nt do anything I know I did a good job. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a potentiometer dial in the drive that I could get to and adjust. This is an early 2006 machine.

I've never heard of a potentiometer in a MacBook drive. You probably have an 8X combo drive, this means that it will read DVDs at 8X. If the disk was burned at a higher speed or even dual layer, you probably can't read it. Try burning at a lower speed and see if that works.
