How to disable Mac OS High Sierra Thermal Throttling?

Seem to be having kernal_task thermal throttling. Where CPU is throttled to 0.8GHz and fans run max. Issue is intermittent so only happens sometimes but it massively frustrating. All sensors are fine. Had previously SSD fitted but had stock HDD refitted to no avail. Confirmed that mac is not overheating. How would I disable the thermal throttling?

You talk about having replaced the HDD for a SSD did you install the OWC in-line thermal sensor when you did this?

What does diagnostics tell you?

完成的

I did previouly but i have had stock HDD put back in. When imac plays up Apple Hardware Diagnostics says there may be problem with system management controller

完成的

Then someone damaged your system if they put back the original drive. If they just put anything else in then they forgot the in-line sensor.

What is the error message you got when you ran diagnostics?

完成的

The sensor was definitely reconnected. No error, it just says 'there may be a problem with the system management controller (SMC)'

You have a hardware level issue, it’s not an issue with Mojave.

I have heard there is a way to disable thermal throttling

Yes!! By using the in-line sensor when replacing the original HDD with either other HDD or SSD: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later

Thr HDd i put back in is the original apple HDD whichwas already in it

So you didn't get any error code in the error message?

Lets give TG Pro a try. You'll need to get the full version to get its diagnostics to work.

If you make a bash script that is excecutable, which kills kernel_task, then everytime it starts to throttle, excecute the script, or have it automatically excecute, and kill the process.

Very true! But you haven't solved the reason why the kernel_task is ramping up!

Just like ignoring your cars overheating alarm until the cars engine seize up! Then what?

Yes, that is true, but it seems as though there may be another problem rather than cooling, based off of the description you gave. What is the cpu temperature when those throttles occur? Also, have you tried resetting the SMC?

完成的

@falcon16 - There are sensor’s for voltage which could be the issue. Running the on board diags or TG Pro diags often brings the problem to light.

"The sensor was definitely reconnected. No error, it just says 'there may be a problem with the system management controller (SMC)'", from a previous post. If that is what the diagnostics stated, try this, please. It will reset the SMC and hopefully fix the problem, if the SMC is at the bottom of this.

Shut the laptop down.

Disconnect the charger, and reconnect it.

Hold LeftShift + control + LeftOption + power button for 10-15 seconds.

Release the buttons.

Wait 5 seconds or so

Power on and see what it does. It should fix it.

Do this if you have any problems with charging, fans, ...

@danj If resetting the SMC doesn't fix it, then yes definitely try TGPro, I have the full version and it is extremely helpful!
