Camera image not projected on LCD screen

I have a powershot G12 and I need help troubleshooting my issue. The problem is that somehow the image is not getting displayed on the screen.

When you turn the camera on you see a blank screen with the setting information displayed. Now, for some reason when you press down on the back middle of the camera the display lights up with an image. So clearly the LCD screen isn’t broken. I have managed to take a picture while pressing down and without pressing down. In playback mode the picture I took without pressing down shows up as a completely black image whereas the picture I took while pressing down shows up regularly even if I’m not pressing down on the camera.

I would be really grateful if someone could help me identify the component that is malfunctioning and/or provide any insight on how to fix this problem

Edit: can someone help me identify the type of screw used here. It looks like a mix between a Philips and a Robinson but It doesn’t really looks like either. Using just a Philips heads doesn’t work (I tried).

Hi @noob10 ,

If the menu screens display OK on the LCD screen without having to press the camera case then it appears as though the camera’s CCD image sensor cable may have a loose connection.

Here’s a link to a video that shows how to replace the image sensor. Hopefully you don’t have to replace it, just dis-assemble the camera far enough so that you can check that the sensor’s cable connection is OK.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Canon PowerShot G12 Rear Function Setting Dial Replacement guide, which may also be of some help. The CCD sensor connection is shown in the image at Step.6

So I had the same problem. Yesterday it worked flawlessly today not at all. I was left with all of the menus showing but no image. Could mine be loose too? I watched the video. I saw where the sensor plugged in. So with my camera still assembled, I moved the screen to open. I pressed with my thumb a little to the left of the flower button on the back of the camera where the screen normally sits, and guess what? The screen flickered a little and then it showed what the lens was looking at! By flexing the back of the camera with my thumb I reseated the sensor connector.
