Install a hard drive, then boot from OS install media to format it and install an OS onto it.

The computer worked for 1 year prior to this. Are you saying I need to install a new hard drive?

I did not know that as you did not include that information with your original post. However, that being the case, it does sound like your hard drive (or SSD) has failed. Assuming it's a spinning disk and not an SSD, you may be looking at a physical or electrical failure (head crash, manufacturing defect, dead motor, etc), a connection failure (loose or damaged cable between drive and motherboard), or a digital failure (data corruption on the drive). All three types of failures have their own troubleshooting methods. The easiest way to determine is to pull the drive and attach it to a functioning computer via a USB interface. If the drive spins up and is recognized by the computer, odds are it's not a physical or electrical failure. A physical/electrical failure requires drive replacement. A connection failure is easy to address; reseat and/or replace the cable(s). A digital failure requires erasing the drive and reinstalling Windows.

What OS is it?

It is running Windows 10. The hard drive is very difficult to get to. There is no panel on the back to get to hard drive. I removed all the screws on the back. but it does not easily come off. I reviewed a post that said to remove key board, but it was not for my exact model. I’m not sure how to get to the hard drive. Dell Inspiron 15-3567.

Start the computer and press F2 until the BIOS appears. Navigate the menu and reset it to it’s defaults. After doing that, double check that the boot mode is set to UEFI and not Legacy. Also make sure that the HDD operating mode is set to AHCI. A lot of times I see that it’s changed to RAID and people don’t realize.

Also check the physical connection, make sure the hard drive didn’t get knocked loose.

If none of those work, I would test your hard drive as it’s likely failed.

Late comment but if you see ST in the BIOS for the drive model or SSHD on the service tag record it's almost always the hard drive.

Hello Michael

There are a number of conditions to make a proper diagnosis without having to make up your device:

1) Your Bios must be set up to boot from a USB port.

2) You must have a USB stick or an external hard drive with a portable Windows version, your case Windows 10.

You can solve the first by adjusting the boot order in the bios.

For the second you need software and another PC.

You get it from the MS site and choose “Download tool now”:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...?

Follow the instructions so that you have the same version of your PC as portable windows on your USB stick or your external hard drive.

The rest is a matter of connecting, booting and seeing if it detect your old hard drive.

Good luck
