Video works intermittently .

I’m having trouble finding my model number on this site. This model number is closest I could find. My model number is : HP 17-061st. The same except for the last 2 letters.

The problem is intermittent video. I have to reboot several times to get the video to work. Does (WIN+F5) make a difference?

Which operating system do you use? Are you able to get to the BIOS screen during the failed boots? Do any problems occur after you have successfully booted?

Windows 10. I don’t get any text on screen ie. (F-12 or other F keys to get to BIOS or CMOS) after failed reboot our successful reboot. When video does work, I have no problems after that. Updates to the OS that require a reboot also kills the video.

Just to get this clear: When you boot your laptop, video doesn't work, but everything else (i.e. fan, keyboard lights, any sound) works? Does the laptop reboot automatically at any time within this mode or does it continue indefinitely? When did this problem start occurring? Have you made any hardware changes recently (i.e. replacing RAM or Hard Drive)?

Yes fan comes on. Keyboard isn't lighted. Power light does come on. Hard drive light comes on when It boots with video. Battery light also comes on even when video isn't working. Only time it reboots is during or after a system update. Haven't made any hardware changes to the machine.

Hi @bvokie ,

Try starting the laptop in safe mode to check if the display works OK or not every time. Try it a few times to be sure that it works OK if it does.

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop to check what happens with its' display. (Even a TV can be an external monitor if you have the appropriate cable and the TV has the appropriate inputs ;-)

You said that "HDD light comes on when it boots with video". What happens when there is no video, is there a HDD light?

If not it may not even be booting into Windows.

According to the user manual (p.43) for your laptop, (taken from this webpage, to get into BIOS in your PC you need to press Esc then F10 on startup.

If the external display also shows no video and there is no HDD light, restart the laptop and go into BIOS and check that the HDD is being detected.

I’d probably chalk it down to either a corrupted BIOS or a faulty video cable, but I’m not sure which one. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop and then booting the PC, to see if it works.

Next, try and see if you can find an update for your BIOS and any updates for your laptop in general. The rebooting will be problematic for the update, so try to avoid it if you at all can.

After that, remove the hard drive and then try to boot the laptop. If that doesn’t work, remove each one of the RAM sticks to see if it is a RAM problem, then remove all the RAM sticks to see if the RAM boot error comes up (the laptop will start beeping).

Finally, see if you can replace the laptop screen. This might not work, so I don’t recommend it, but try and find a replacement online and see if you can switch it out. At that point it might just be earlier to bring it to a repair shop.

I hope this helps!

Carpe Diem,

Minas
