Why is my MacBook not able to start up?

Hi all,

I have some problems with my mid 2010 15” macbook pro. It wont turn on anymore. This happend after one of the many “Kerner panics“ this laptop used to have. Because of the fauty video card this happened once in a while. Tried software solutions to stop the dynamic switching between the CPU and video card, but i was never able to stop these errors completely.

But I was always able to just restart the laptop after this error, but not this time.

Went to the Apple Store and somebody tried the classic reset button combinations. After that he disconnected the battery and reconnected, but this didnt help. That was all that he could do, said that the motherboard probably should be replaced..

One thing is pretty suspicious; the battery lights on the side only turn on when the adapter is connected and show all but one light. When the adapter is not connected no lights light up after pressing the button. What could this mean?

Also tried the SMC reset myself and disconnected the battery. No luck. Don’t see anything strange on the inside, apart from alot of dust.

Any suggestions to get to the root of the problem?

Thanks in advance!

@pietersnoeks Which software solution did you use for the video problem? Leave it plugged in for several hours to try to charge the battery up and see if the mag-safe adapter ever goes to a solid green.

After you are getting at least 3 battery indicator lights, open it up and disconnect the battery (examine it for swelling at this time. Disconnect the mag-safe. Press and hold the power on button for 15 seconds, Now reconnect the battery and mag-safe. You should get a spontaneous reboot if the logic board is good.

Have you changed out (or had someone else change out) C7771, the faulty tantalum capacitor that will cause kernel panics?

This is a pretty common problem on this motherboard.

I would check YouTube or some other resources explaining the process to change this component out and also to test it to see if it is bad.

Basically, it will over time fail and cause a short circuit to ground causing an important power rail to not be present - thus your computer won't work.

Best of luck and if you need more follow up help, shoot us a comment here!

Happy repairing!
