Problem with a Samsung 850 PRO SSD

Hello all!

I’ve had a Samsung 850 Pro installed in my 2011 13’’ MacBook Pro as a startup drive, for almost two years until it stopped working about two months ago. It stopped being recognized so I took it to warranty at the store I bought it from.

I received it back a couple of weeks ago, with them telling me they performed a firmware update on the SSD, and that it was fine. When I tried to install it back in the MacBook the same problem occurred. I can’t even correctly format the drive through the disk utility.

Today I took it back to the store and their position is that they don’t guarantee compatibility with a Mac system, and the tests they do on a Windows computer all seem perfectly fine, so nothing they can help me with (I’ve contacted Samsung directly, but still waiting on a response from them).

What would be my course of action, and could it be solved by something simple like a firmware update on the Mac or something?

Thank you!

Have you tried SMC and PRAM/NVRAM resets? If not, I would try those resets and see if those help.

You’re likely hitting a HD SATA cable failure. I often replace the cable in the course of upgrading this series as the original cable was not really durable for a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive, Apple installed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives in this series.

Here’s the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 but I would use this cable MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable this cable is better built. In addition I would place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over, I would also not bend the cable as the cable curves around the edge, you want an arc not a crisp fold as that damages the foil wires inside.

This cable connects a SATA I, SATA II, or SATA III hard drive to the logic board.图片

Those 2012 model HDD cables are much faster indeed, and when I was upgrading my school's teachers to SSD's instead of HDD's on their ancient 2011 MBPs I switched their cables too. I recommend the 2012 cable if you are planning to use a SSD.

Would the original cable only cause problems with a SSD? It is working fine with the HDD I have in it in the meantime

If the SMC, PRAM/NVRAM resets do not help at all, then it is likely as Dan said that your HDD cable is damaged. If you do replace the HDD cable, I highly suggest you get the 2012 cable as it will allow for faster data travel.

mmoreno - The issue is the data rate going across the cable. SSD's are able to push as well as pull more data across than a HDD as such the cable has a big factor in the transmission of the signal. As a matter of corse I always replace the cable in any of the Unibody MacBook systems when upgrading the drive to a SSD.

I always use the better built cable from the 2012 series as it was designed to support SATA III (6.0 gb/s) drives unlike your early 2011 which used a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) HDD when it was introduced. Later on with a firmware update the system was able to support a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) HDD. Even then the cable was updated!

The late 2011 model introduced an Apple SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) HDD. Even still the data rates of a HDD are not as intense as a SSD so the cable the late 2011 had was able to support the HDD data flows but often failed with SSD data flows.

And lastly, people often damaged the cables by creasing them tightly and some third party cables where just plainly bad! In addition the wear of the cable rubbing on the uppercase damaged a lot of them.
