Volvo XC90 2.5T Will Not Crank, Starter, Relay, Fuses All Good?

All of a sudden with no warning stopped and would not crank, no immobilizer activated, just won't crank, had to have towed home, checked starter, jumping pin 87 to 30 cranked starter, so it is not starter, swapped starter relay, checked all fuses with meter, pulled halo to check connections, pulled apart ignition and sprayed electronic cleaner on contacts and connections, nothing has helped. Any suggestions on how to resolve this mystery.

Greetings everyone,

I hope that this issue is been solved by now. However, for those of you following this thread, I would suggest to check the battery first. Are all the components getting electricity, can you hear the fuel pump running. Just asking, by any chance did you get new key fobs?

Best of luck to you all!

Turned out to be transmitter in key, crazy, took a month in Volvo service after having to tow XC90 to dealer, another $250. after having it towed home for $125., then dealer says need new key, had to order from Sweden, another two weeks, and finally, It starts, but with bill of $550. I said the key was more than the XC90 was worth. lol

Dear Friend

I have a similar case with a 2018 XC90. The motor turns Y turns but does not start. Everything started since the airbag module was changed for a new one. but even though the original airbag ecu is returned the engine does not start. any suggestions?

thanks for your help

When you mention changing the airbag, that seems to imply an accident? There are many things which you have to check if you have not already. First, does the locking of your vehicle set the alarm system, as in, the blinking light activates, then leave window open, open door, see if alarm goes off. Sounds crazy, but this alarm system will cause no start conditions. So verify alarm is working properly first.

Obviously, check all fuses, a blown fuel pump fuse can cause crank no start condition, as will the fuel pump relay. You can look under the hood and fuse box is easy to access on driver side in square plastic box in plain site. Pull cover and you will see lay out chart, look for related fuses for fuel pump, you can swap the relay with other like relay in box. You will see several are the same relay, so easy way to diagnose with no cost or tools needed.

If you have verified you have fuel to engine, then check spark, not as easy, for you need tools to pull a spark plug coil and insert screw driver into the end of coil obviously leaving it connected, place near engine and have someone crank the engine, you should see a spark at the point of grounding screw driver to block of engine, WARNING, do not touch metal of screw driver, hold plastic handle to position near grounded block to see spark. If no spark, that points to other fuses, so check related fuses again. There are also fuses in the drive side dash panel, as well as under steering wheel to left, as well as in rear driver side compartment panel, check them all, there are dozens of fuses which may be your issue.

Turned out that the ignition key decided to crap out, would not transmit to ignition halo receiver, had to get towed home, and then to dealer, XC90 sat in dealer for a month before they could diagnose, then said they had to order key from Sweden, another two weeks, crazy, but what was even more crazy, cost me over $550. including tow, all for a stupid new key.

Sad to say, it turned out to be key transceiver which set immobilizer to not crank. Had to have XC90 towed to dealer since it has to be programmed, they didn’t get to even bringing vehicle into service for 5 weeks, then the bad news, they had no key in stock, had to order from Sweden which killed another week, but here is the worst part, $550. for a flipping key and programming. Last Volvo I will ever own. By the way, I replaced starter, starter relay, new battery even though it was only a year old, new receiver halo, ignition switch, so everything but the most expensive issue, the key. Lesson learned, with Volvo’s it is always the most expensive part. lol

Im having a issue too where its starts from 7am to 12 but from 2pm to like 10pm it wont turn on. So ya think it could be the key also. Everyday same time… im already stressing out

No, that does not sound like a key issue. It would more likely be heat related, so when you say it won't start from 2 to 10PM, do you mean it won't crank, or turns over and failed to start? Obviously in AM it is cooler in most areas, and heat is an issue in some cases with no start problems.

It would be helpful to others to post your problems solution to define what caused you starting issues.

Also having this issue...cranks in morning...even at freezing temp. Refuses to crank in afternoon. Replaced battery and starter. Still no go.
