Is the reason iMac SLOW when no LCD and non-Apple HDD?

Hi everyone :)

Just purchased 27" iMac 2012 without LCD and without Apple HDD (which means no temp sensor in it) iMac is slow - will buying cracked (but WORKING) LCD (I'll be using in on my 40" TV) fix speed iMac?

Do I have to fix HDD sensor too to have "fast" iMac?

It is so slow even cursor is barely manage to move :(

Thank You for helping me.

What system are you running and did this start after you last system update?

hallo Mayer - noup - iMac got missing HDD and LCD - just want to know if LCD causing CPU throttling (slow) iMac as thermal sensor in it.

I am pretty pretty sure missing HDD (which has build in thermal sensor as well) should not cause CPU throttling (slow) as I had iMac 27" but 2011 and it did not cause CPU throttling (slow) - just fans full on (which I regulated by Mac Fan Control app)

...so I don't talk about general slow iMac - I talk about CPU throttling

There are a number of reasons of why it is slow. The hard drive may be bad or have a low RPM. The iMac also doesn't see the temperature sensor so it keeps it at a low RPM just in case of HDD overheat. It sounds like you bought this device second hand which means that parts inside it may be broken or some of the RAM may have even been removed/damaged. Hope this helps!

Definitely I will check RAM sticks - but that would be strange it they would be working but not.

Through all those my 20 years home computer repairs - I did not seen working BUT don't RAM - I've seen working OR not working RAM :)

HDD should be not a problem because...... as I said in my question - it is not exists :)

*it shouldn't be a problem as I know Apple HDD got build in temperature sensor - but I had 2011 iMac 27 with non Apple SATA SSD and iMac had no throttling (just fans full on)

so RAM checked in my MacBook and 100% working (not throttling)

The newer Intel chips support system throttling so the clock of the chip is reduced to prevent the CPU from being damaged from high heat. The newer ‘Thin series’ iMac’s use this signal line.

So to answer your question: Yes! Not having the display connected as well as the drive will cause SMC to tell the CPU to throttle.

Thank You Dan - today I've received display replacement BUT without LCD cable - I've connected just the one cable as LCD has build in - I guess it is responsible for temperature sensor.

Before I receive it in few weeks (as ordered it from other country) - could You please tell me if it will stop throttling when I connect it- or iMac should be "fast" now?

Another thing - will missing Apple HDD throttle CPU or just fans full - but it should be fast?

I don;t want to invest too much money in it as I already spent too much - and realised foot stand got broken springs - I just want to use it as Mac Mini connected to TV

Thank You Dan

Lets step back here...

- SMC tells the CPU to go into throttle as SMC thinks there is a heat issue.

- In addition, with one or more sensors disabled or bad it will go into safe mode which in turn tells the CPU to go into throttle mode.

So if you still have a bad or missing sensor the answer is yes the system will be in throttle mode. I would recommend you install an app which can show you the status of your sensors and fans. I would recommend you install this one as I've found it's the best for this task: TG Pro

Another good app is Macs Fan control if that one doesn't work (standard issue shows you heat of components, fan speed etc), the link is here: https://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-con...

@timothymcevoy - Macs Fan Control is not very useful in its presentation of the temps unlike TG Pro. I also don't like how they override the fan logic.

I've seen quite a few systems with dead fans and logic boards do to people mis-using it!

Just like Opioids they can be useful but misused can kill you! If you don't understand there limits.
