Monitor doesn't connect to (a working) PC via HDMI

I'm relatively new to this, so please bear with me here...

It's only been a month since I've built my own PC. I'm not sure if my monitor and its wires (HDMI and display port) have a play in it but I had it exchanged (a HP Pavilion) hoping it would fix the vertical lines that appeared on the screen. ...

It did and now I've encountered a whole new problem. I was originally using a display port to connect my PC and the newly replaced monitor together, but there would be times where the monitor would not pick up the signal. I switch to a HDMI port and it worked ... for a while.

About 2-3 times when I would turn it on, there would be a blue screen error message from Windows 10 telling me "System_service_except ... " and "What failed: WdFilter.sys"

It would restart on its on and then would work fine afterwards. I made sure everything is up to date, no viruses or anything sketchy that would trigger such behavior.

Sometimes the computer freezes and I would have to do a hard press on the power-button just so I can turn it off and restart it all over again.

Then yesterday, I was using my computer when it froze again. This time there was this buzzing noise that would not stop. The cursor was also frozen. Like before, I did a hard press on the power-button to force a shut off. Unlike the other times, the monitor would not detect my PC anymore, even when the fans and lights are running on.

I am convince that it's the PC since the same monitor I'm using works perfectly fine for when I use it with the PS4 or/and when I connect it to my laptop.

I did some research, checking to see any loose screws, faulty or burnt wires, cleaned out dusty parts, exchanging different HDMIs, but no luck. I took out the cMOS battery for 5 mins with everything turned off and unplugged, and still wouldn't work. I also tried doing hard-press on the power button (with everything off ofc) for 60 secs and still no luck.

Everything is brand new, and the friend that had help me assemble the parts did everything accordingly. (Or so I'm hoping...) ... I am not sure if this is something my friend can help, since he only knows the basics, and so I'm hoping I can get some answers from here before seeking a professional's help.

Here are the following parts that I have for my build--

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 6core processor

Motherboard: Tomahawk AM4 AMD B350 sata 6gb/s

Memory: Team Vulcan 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4-2800

Storage: WD sata 6Gb/s 500GB internal ssd

Video Card: Geforce Nvidia GTX 1070 8gb

Power Supply: SSR 550RD 550w 80+ Gold

Monitor: HP Pavilion 32in.

I had this built from PCPartPicker and so everything is compatible, even the monitor itself (which by the way has only 2 HDMI ports and 1 display port.)

If you have any further questions, please let me know. Thank you!

Hi @christelle_cy

Good day,

I would suggest testing your computer memory (RAM) with memtest86 to check for any possible issues.

My Favorite Test on memtest >

c - 1 - 3 - 5

Let it test for 20 Pass if so.

and next step, if RAM is pass,

Try running furmark to stress your GPU,

you may consider downloading 3DMark Basic Edition to test your systems.

Hi @christelle_cy ,

Try running the PC in safe mode and see if it happens.

If it performs OK you've got a driver problem.

Also check the BIOS version of the motherboard. Just because it is "new" doesn't mean that it is up to date. It could have been on the shelf for a while. Noticed that there are a few PCIe improvements to the BIOS with a few revision updates since Jan'18. Isn't your video card on PCIe?

WDfilter.sys points to Windows Defender not working properly.

More info here:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...

Basically what you need to do is temporarily disable Windows Defender and run windows update, then re-enable it which it will do itself automatically later and it should work fine after that.

The WDFilter.sys BSOD is very common fault caused by Windows Defender, started happening a lot this year after march.

Hi @benjamen50 ,

After March, Windows Spring creators update 1803 perhaps?

Yes, I think it is related to that.

I did what you suggested and it worked! I did further research and one suggested to take out the gpu and install it back. Now let's hope it stays this way.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
