**UPDATE Stuck in boot loop, was able to get it out, now back in loop?

**UPDATE 3/22/2018**

I left the phone off all night, then in the morning I turned it on by plugging it into a wall outlet, phone booted up and wact normal like I was setting it up for the first time. Set it up as a new phone, works great EXCEPT, anything involing the microphone wont work/freezes. Pressing record on voice memos or video recordings, the recording button changes from a red circle to a red square but the timer doesnt count and it doesnt respond immediately to stoping the recording. Thoughts? Also, I cant hear or be heard on phone calls, sounds like hardware?

3/21/2018 Apologize in advanced for the long post!

Read through a lot of the great knowledge on here, going to give it a shot, I just wanted to ask in case anyone could help expedite my process.

I bought a used iphone 7 for $100.00 that was stuck in a boot loop (White Screen, black Apple Logo). I have an iphone 5s that I've had for 3 years and after doing research online, seeing that iphone 7s stuck in boot loops was fairly common, I figured I'd take the risk of trying to get it out.

Brought the phone home, put in in DFU mode and got the software updated to current ios. Tried downgrading to 10, found out that doesnt work. It would show up in itunes with the older owners name, battery percentage, available space, all the basic info. I let the phone charge on my Lenovo laptop via genuine lightning cable all night long.

The nextmorning I read some users had issues with the phone getting to about 75 percent completed status on the updating software bar and the phone would just reset. The solved this by opening up the sim card door and using a hairdryer directed towards it to get the phone hot and this would work. My phone would appear to get 98 percent of the way done, the itune message would pop up and say, "The update was complete, your device will restart in 10 seconds.."So I gave it a shot. Didn't work. Then I tried it again later and after my phone cooled down a bit it worked! Phone started up like it was a new iphone, ran me through everything, touch i.d., new pass code, insert sim card. I attempte to restore it with my iphone 5s back up. Back up seemed to go just fine, it restarted the device with the white background/black logo but then loaded my passcode prompt. Typed in my new passcode, phone froze for a bit and rebooted. Again prompted me to enter my passcode, after it accepted my passcode, it showed a white screen that said I needed to update, updated it and it back in the boot loop. Re-heating it hasnt worked.

I apologize for the wordy write-up! I realize that it, being a used phone, is probably water damaged, but my hopes where that the wordy write-up may help more expereienced users crack this one.

Questions,

- My 5s is running 10. 3.3 when I ran the 'restore' option on the 7, that doesnt also load that ios from the 5s does it? Could that have made things worse?

- If it is water damage, what components might be damaged? Are they worth replacing, by myself (decently skilled DIYer) or a pro? I was looking at NAND's and upgrading since its only a 32 gb.

Should I just part it out and try and break even? Is that even an option?

Thanks so much!

This definitely sounds like the common audio ic fault on iPhone 7/7+ from flexion damage at the audio ic on the logic board. It’s a microsoldering job—replace the audio ic and run reinforcing jumpers to prevent recurrence of the same design flaw manifestation.

Wow, thanks for that detailed observation! The home button does activate when its stuck in the boot loop. I figure out out to get it out of the boot loop so it's just operating as an expensive iPod with no audio capabilities haha. What do shops usually charge to replace the audio ic and run reinforcing jumpers like Jessa suggested? I think I saw on ipad rehab that you guys charge $150.00 for audio issues Jessa? Probably not worth it at that rate.

Based on your description, it sounds like the phone may indeed be water damaged. You should open it up and look at the water indicator stickers to see if they turned red. If they are red, then you will want to try to decontaminate the board:

  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

If the board doesn't appear to have been damaged by water, look for loose screws, missing shields/brackets or damaged flexes...anything that would make you believe this phone has been repaired. If that's the case, I would sell it for parts because who knows what was done to the board and clearly it wasn't a succesfull repair.

Oh yeah...upgrading the memory, while possible, is not a DIY repair, not even for a fairly skilled fixer.

Thanks Minho! Just found your response on "iPhone 7 Plus Microphone Causes Apps to Freeze/Hang" and yes it wounds like the same issue. I appreciate it so much!

Also, if replacing the logic board an option? Is that cost-effective or worthwhile?

The logic board IS the phone, so it's rarely cost-effective.

Saw two of these today.

Its either your audio iC or BB. If the home button clicks while its stuck on the apple logo its definitely the audio ic.

I've seen some people in a secret Facebook group as low as $80 but as high as $150. Most people charge right in the middle of that range. I'm sure i can find someone in your area if you post your city and state.

Thanks, Edd! I live in Orem, Utah but I'm up in Salt Lake City quite often so somewhere inbetween there isnt a problem. I tried contacting a local store but they never resoponded to the tickets I sent them. Mobile Express, or something like that? I appreciate the help so much!
