Printing problem fading text

The right part of my text is grey instead of black. The rest of the printing is perfectly black but on the right side of the text there's a whole part that is faded into grey. 2/3 is black and 1/3 is greyish. What can I do?

Update (02/14/2018)

Thank you for your answer. I have a HP Color LaserJet CP1515n.

The toner is still very full and I don't get the message that it's low.

How can I see if the print is strong before it gets fused. I'm sorry, I don't get that.

@liesl have you checked the drum, not the toner?

Have you checked the level for the maintenance kit?

HP toners traditionally use the toner for waste toner collection. This is an AIO toner model, so the major printing components like waste toner hoppers are part of the cartridge.

HP doesn't use external waste toner tanks on their consumer and SMB laser printers and this is one of those. You're thinking about companies like Samsung, Ricoh and Xerox, who use them across the board.

@nick, the drum works with the toner to fuse the toner powder to paper.

The model of HP is not specified. I replace HP maintenance kits all the time.

The OP mentioned what they have. They own a LaserJet CP1515n. It's one of the basic models that use the toner for waste collection. The drum is replaced with the toner too.

@nick so then its the maintenance kit that likely needs replacing... which includes the fuser.

The fuser is a lifetime part on these kinds of printers. HP does NOT intend that it be replaced individually. HP also does the same thing with the ITB.

Assuming your cartridge is not low on toner, your printer may need cleaning of internal components. You can easily remove some rollers and other paper handling parts via the access panels. Others require more serious disassembly.

Start off by inspecting the quality of the print before it gets to the fuser and try a new set of toner. There's no specific order this has to be done in, but it's often easier to start with the toner.

The first thing to do is to replace the toner. A good 3rd party toner will work for this step if you don't feel like spending a lot in case the printer is bad and you don't want to be tied to this series if toner doesn't help. In a lot of cases, the toner runs out before the chip reports 0% or the toner supply outlasts the actual cartridge. In some cases, it happens because the toner is old and beginning to degrade. This happened on my M401n when I had to replace the toner due to drum issues with ~50 pages left. If the toner is genuine HP, it should have a date like this on it:

If your problem isn't caused by the toner, it's going to be a transfer roller, ITB (Intermediate Transfer Belt) or fuser. HP integrates the other components into the toner carts on a lot of printers. Do a "halfway test" and see if it's strong before it gets fused to the page. If this is the case, it's a cut and dry fuser problem. The problem with this test on color models it can be difficult due to the layout of the ITB. However, some of them will be worse then others. The idea behind the "halfway test" is it is used to give the user an idea of what the problem is and where it happens,

If the print is weak before it gets fused, it can be one of these:

  • Toner
  • Transfer roller
  • ITB

If the print is strong until it gets fused to the page, it has a fuser problem and is absorbing toner.

If the fuser has an issue, the replacement cost and difficulty varies. Your printer is one of the more notoriously bad ones, since you need to take apart a good chunk of the printer to access the fuser. I would suggest looking for a new printer if it turns out to be the fuser on this model. The ITB is even more difficult to replace then the fuser on this series.

The idea is you need to open the door before it can get to the fuser. Color models are difficult to accomplish this on due to the ITB design. Now that I know it's a color model, you should try toner first. It's possible you have old toner with a worn out drum (check the date on the cartridge to see how old it is). You can see more about that test from a site like Printer Techs. However, this site may be more useful.

Most of the time these Laser printers are B/W so I assumed the printer has a paper path that's friendly to this test. Having a color model also means the ITB is suspect and makes things more complicated :(. I've updated my answer now that I know what I'm dealing with. I also added a picture of the date formatting on genuine toner so you can age the toner you have.

Hello Nick

Thanks for your time.

The toner is not low and not old. I bought the toner in September. It apppears to be half-full now.

I ran a test and it showed the same problem. Colours and blured, black is perfect on 2/3 of the page and 1/3 is faded.

I didn't buy the original toner, but a brand that gets very good reviews. You think that's the cause?

完成的

It depends on the manufacturer. Some are bad, while others are good in the long term. Most reviews are written while the toner is too new to do a long term test.

This can also happen if you forget to pull the toner tab, so I'd check that as well. I'd also look into trying a new set of toner to rule that out since that's a lot easier to troubleshoot and replace then the transfer roller or ITB. The ITB is a "lifetime" part on lower end models, which is why replacing it sucks. The tab is likely removed, but it doesn't hurt to check since people often miss the tab. HP had to put a warning in the newer models like the Pro 400 Series because people kept the tab in.
