第六代 iPod classic 。机型型号 A1238,80/120/160 GB 机械硬盘,黑色或银色金属前面板。

Menu button doesnt work

After opening my classic 6th gen 80gb iPod classic a few times, I've found that the menu button doesn't work. It was working before with the click wheel that was a little wonky, but having replaced the click wheel with a new one, the previous problem disappeared only to be replaced by a different one with the menu button.

All the other functionalities of the click wheel work: rotation, pause, forward and backward, center button, but the menu button doesn't work.

This means I can't reset it or get it into diagnostic mode (as far as I can tell).

What can I do in this scenario?

And you've tried putting the old one back on? To rule out the part as the problem?

Unfortunately I don't have the old one anymore :(

@tightpants you want to check the microswitches on the board. Pushing the menu button does do nothing but activate the switch on the logic board. Sometimes the rubber pads on the switch come off and do not let the clickwheel depress the switch far enough. Check the switch as shown in the pictures.

To fix that you can add either a new rubber tip or something similar to fix that. I used some self sticking felt pads from a crafts store. If the switch works (as shown) and if the clickwheel engages it then the issue is actually one on the logic board.

Thanks for your help so far.

So there must necessarily be a significantly higher reading from the multimeter when the button is activated?

I performed this test without fully understanding the goal and found that the button passes current while the button is in both the on and off positions. This, however, is not the point of the experiment? It should be way higher with the button pressed?

I'll try to do this test again just to make sure, as it seems like this iPod is a brick if that's actually the case. Please let me know.

@tightpants make sure that your meter is in ohm mode while you are trying to check continuity. You are not measuring current but resistance. Not depressed=high resistance depressed=low resistance
