How do I get battery acid corrosion of the board?

My dads old original nintendo gameboy was in storage for 15+ years with batteries in it and the batteries leaked into the main board and hardened over that time period. I was wondering if there was any chance of saving it and how to get it off. As a side note the corrosion has eaten away the battery terminals and i was wondering if it will just run on the power adapter.

Brandon Coleman just as suggested by Russ Walden. First remember that your batteries are alkaline not acidic. Alkalinity is just as corrosive as acidity but to clean it you will need the acidity. I use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and sterile water. It is okay to place the whole board in that solution. Use a small soft brush to gently scrub the residue of the board. Once it is properly cleaned, rinse it of with sterile water. Then clean the board with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to displace all the water. Looking at the schematic, your GameBoy should work with just an AC adapter. If you post some images of your circuit board and the damage, I am sure we can give you a better idea on how to fix it.

Brandon --

White vinegar will usually remove battery corrosion. Apply liberally with cloth or Q-tip in hard to reach areas. Only way to know about running on ac adapter is to try it -- some devices do, some don't.

Good luck.

Just like the vinegar solution, If it doesn’t work, try using Isopropyl Alcohol. I’ve used it to clean off corrosion on toys. Good luck.
