The Sony CFD-S05 unit will not power up

When I try to turn the unit on it briefly reads 3 (volume indicator and Mega Bass). It then immediately shuts down. I have tried with batteries and the power cord.

Hi cndwilson a friend brought in the same device with the same problem. I could not find any burned/leaking or domed looking caps but I'll check again. Did you manage to solve the problem?

Kind regards

Ronald

@radiotitus After 25 or 30 years the problem remains and whilein the roof space agai, there it still was

I tried to dismantle it but no go without reverting to desperate means. I have a good selection of tools by the way. T'would ba shame to throw it out as it looks like new. Many thanks. Any help would be appreciated Regards, Reggie Kidd

Thanks for the help, replaced c329 and c953 with some 470uf 50v left over from flat screen tv light repair. Works great now.

Thank you, with your help I managed to save my Sony radio, I had 470uf 25V caps in my soldering kit, did the same thing as mh1 and changed the c329 and c953. I am listening to it now !

Hello, I also have this problem and wonder if you could help me? I'm a complete novice with no knowledge or experience but I do have a soldering iron. I have located c329 and c953 and would like to try to replace them, but I notice they are slightly different sizes. Which capacitors do I need and where can I obtain them from. By the way neither look to be blown. It was my late mothers machine and although not worth the expense or taking it somewhere to get repaired I would love to manage to do the repair myself if possible. Hoping you can advice. Kindest regards. Gerald

I troublehot (and fixed!) that very problem just the other day. You can get schematics for that unit at electrotanya. The symptom you describe happens when the main voltage does not turn on (quickly enough) when the unit leaves standby mode. The start-up process is actually quite complex (possibly it is meant as short-circuit protection): Power is turned on by a high level on the base of Q951. The high level there turns on the transistor. The first thing that happens is that the main power rails (+9V, +6.2V and +3.3V) are pre-charged through the diodes D951 and D952 (a dual diode). The total current available to pre-charge the power rails is limit by R950-R953 to around 20mA. Only when all of the power rails are charged to around 1.0V, the emitter voltage at Q951 is high enough to turn on Q953 which drivers the main power switch transistor Q952. The +6.2V and +3.3V regulators are powered from the output of Q952 and thus also turn on after Q952 turns on.

In the case of my broken unit, the pre-charge didn’t manage to bring up the +9V rail above 100mV (which can be measured for example at pin 1 of IC302). This was caused by excessive leakage current in C329. I temporarily “fixed” it by accidentally shorting the switched +9V line to the unswitched +9V line, which slightly reformed the capacitor. The permanent fix is to replace the cap.

Novice here. What is the "cap" you refer to.

完成的

Hi @ Mary Smyth,

I think that the "cap" being referred to is "capacitor" C329 on the circuit board.

The value of the capacitor and its' working voltage value (VW) is usually stamped on the side of the capacitor

IF it is an Electrolytic type capacitor it will have a stripe down one side indicating the -ve leg of the capacitor. Usually it is marked on the circuit board where the capacitor is installed which is the +ve leg so be aware if you replace it, ensure that it is installed in the correct way, as reversing a capacitor can damage them (if the voltage s high enough in relation to their working voltage they can even explode with a bang!)

Thanks jayeff. I'll take it apart and check this out.

@Mary Smyth: @jayeff is right. I really recommend you to get the service instruction of that device. I already hinted at a source in my answer: Go to elektrotanya.com and search for "CFD-S05" in the "service manuals, schematics, eeproms finder" dialog box. The Service manual contains the PCB layouts, the schematics and parts list. C329 is an electrolytic cap, 470µF, 16V. More volts don't matter, but the new capacitor needs to fit into the place of the old one. The leg spacing of C329 is 2.5mm or 1/10inch. Some tables quote it as "RM2.5". Installing capacitors with bigger leg spacing is more difficult, but it should work, too.

To replace the capacitor, you need to desolder the broken capacitor and solder a new capacitor there. Use the service manual as reference for how to unmount the PCB to get access to the soldering side of the PCB.

My cfd-s05 has the same symptoms. I switched out capacitor c329 with a new cap, but still the same problem persist.

Thank you, Mark, for an answer that works! Finally put my unit back together after months of it being in pieces. I was about ready to give up, but then your answer popped up in my inbox. I tested the cap and sure enough it was shorted. Thanks again for that!

If you are not experienced with the proper use of a soldering iron and removing and replacing electronic parts, I don’t recommend you attempt it, as soldering has to be done correctly or it will result in a weak joint.

I did have this identical problem and did replace a couple of capacitors but in the end the cause of the unit powering off after turning it on was the power cord itself !!

At some point someone had used a different AC cord for this unit and the molding of the power plug end (to go into the rear of the unit) was not matched to the shape of the player receptacle - thus making poor and intermittent contact.

Of course the instant the unit had a drop in power for a split second, it shut down.

I would recommend you try this one solution before doing anything internally.

If you cannot locate the correct AC cord, try Amazon or any number of shopping sites on the web. I often find these cables at thrift stores for a couple of dollars but you must match the plug shape with the units ac port on the back.

If you are sure you have the original AC cord, the connections may be worn out or the pins in the unit itself may have to be spread open a little .

No soldering required for this fix !!!!!

Hello, Thank you for trying to advise me, I'm afraid that the problem isn't with my mains cable etc, power is getting through to the machine, but I'm getting the '3' plus symbols coming up on the display and it won't do anything, so it looks like either soldering iron or the bin as a repair shop would charge me as much as the unit is worth. Thank you again though, it's kind of you to reply and advise. All the best. Gerald

cndwilson sounds like you have an issue with the power circuitry on the mainboard. Disassemble it and check for any burned/leaking or domed looking caps. Post some images of your board with your question. Use this guidefor that. That way we can see what you see. Use these guides to work on your Sony

Dumb question: where does one order c329 or c953 parts? Please and thanks - have looked online but would appreciate any recommendations as I have exactly the same problem as the very first post (powers up for a second with 3 volume showing but cannot sustain power). Otherwise unit is clean and well cared for:-) thanks, Nancy from Vancouver Canada

I think with this CD player any of the electrolytic caps are suspect. As I remember there are several power supply lines of different voltages in this unit. When troubleshooting I found it easiest to disconnect all the supply lines and then check them one by one to see which one is shorted. When you find the shorted supply line start removing capacitors on that line until the short goes away. Once the short disappears you found the shorted capacitor.

Alternatively you could just replace all the electrolytics. It’s likely just a matter of time until they all short out.

Actually this big cap (on the board) tested out ok with a capacitance tester so must have been failing under load.

Hi @transform2020,

Asking questions when you don’t know is never dumb, not asking questions when you don’t know, is.

Here’s a link that may help.

Just select the value of the capacitor C329 = 470uF 16V, can’t see C953 value shown in answers above, but it should be marked on the capacitor itself.

Alternatively, there are electronics parts suppliers in Vancouver.

Just search for electronics parts Vancouver Canada to get results. Contact them and ask if they have the required components in stock.

Ebay also has them but you mostly have to order in minimum quantities (mostly >5) and there may be shipping delays as the less expensive ones are shipped out of China

I am fixing a unit with the identical problem. After some troubleshooting and replacing the two above stated capacitors, the unit continued to do the same. (Turn on very briefly)

I should have gone with my first instincts which was a fault in the capacitor at C950 !!

4700uF @ 16V

(I replaced it with a 25V)

Once this cap was replaced, the unit functioned as it should.

My problem with this unit was electrical but caused by someone dropped something heavy on the front upper circuit board and cracked the circuit board as well as the plastic form that holds the buttons. Maybe someone has a used unit from which i might obtain used parts. Please email at wjbraun1941@gmail.com. So not always electronic parts. Wally
