What is wrong with my laptop if it is overheating and shutting down?
If my laptop keeps overheating and shutting down, does that mean the fan is malfunctioning? Does it need to be replaced or just cleaned out?
1) Check the vents are not blocked with dust
2) check to see if the fan actually works. Maybe dust is preventing it from spinning.
3) If you are comfortable disassembling your laptop, change the thermal paste on your CPU/heat sink.

With the age of your computer I would recommend getting a new one. With the labor required and any possible new parts or even an OS reload the cost would far outway the worth of the laptop. I believe you would be very happy with a new laptop. I recommend ACER or LENOVO laptops, great customer service and good bang for the buck.
