USB problem("This device could achieve higher performance")

I run Windows 7 on my TP T42.

When I plug in a USB device it tells me that I could achieve higher performance, which means it now only uses USB1.1 but it used to use 2.0.

Forums state that my southbridge connection is broken.

Does anybody have a good manuel how to fix the southbridge by myself (soldering it again)?

Ok, southbridge issues usually start showing other problems then USB. alright so if it's not a driver issue then you would need to reflow/reball the SB. That is very difficult to do and requires special equipment and experience. You could have a shop do it for you and it should not be all that expensive, esp if you find the chip you need and ship just the MB in to them. + more to it then that, confirming the problem on their end too...........

Like i mentioned in my other answer, and someone else did too, a short or even long term solution would be to get a USB PCMCIA card.

I don't like the idea of having some kind of adapter card hanging out of my laptop any more then anyone else I would guess, brings me back to the late 90's.

To sum up, the laptop is fairly old, and the repair isn't expensive but not cheap either when considering the value of the laptop (approx cost of the repair ), + finding a shop that will do it and do it cheap and right.........so a temporary work around might be the best approach due to the value of the machine and the cost of the repair.

You could also replace the motherboard with a used one, that would be cheapest as far as getting it fixed, but that is also a considerable amount of work and calling microsoft about license etc etc......but could be done yourself.

I don't wish to diminish the want or need to self repair but as far as this specific repair, actual repair of the part etc......... not possible even for the older repair guys i know with 30yrs soldering experience without giving them the proper expensive equipment........OR unless you have A-team music and an arc welder then your set.....

replace the MB or sell for parts and buy a T61 for $250

I got to the point that I also think that just replacing the motherboard would be the easiest thing to do.

Hi Kana, help me to understand this. Your Southbridge is on the Fritz; your USB is of the slow connection. I am with the understanding that there are commonly two errors with the Southbridge. One being electrostatic discharge wich can cause the chip to latch up and will lead to damage of the chip with acutal burn marks on the outside wich leads to POST failure. Obviously not your case, and then there is the internal burn of the chip that will lead to non-responding usb ports. I hope I got this right. Now to repair your Southbridge you would actually have to physically replace that chip and resolder it. This of course would require superb soldering skills and great tools. Would it not be easier and more economical to purchase a PCMCIa-to-USB2 adapter? Now I am not saying that it can't be done. I did find this site http://www.associatedcontent.com/article... that tells you about reflowing the board in connection with failing Southbridge solder connections. I know it's a different laptop but the procedure should be the same. I do hope this helps and let us know how it works out. It does sound really interesting. Good Luck

Hey oldturkey,

I will go through the page and see if it helps.

But to discribe the problem again.

I found on the internet that old IBM Thinkpads have a common problem, which is called "flexing".Felxing comes fro picking up your laptop only in one corner, so the rest of the body bends a little bit down.

This downbending makes the motherboard bend, which again leads to cracks in soldered connection between for example the southbridge and the motherboard.

I assume that it is my southbridge connection that is partly cracked, because if this happens, your USB connection startsworking only from time to time or only really slow. (which are the symptomes my T42 has)

I checked the website and it seems like a possibility, but I wont do that as long my Laptop still runs. The Risk is to high.

i haven't looked into this in detail, if the USB ports worked fine before the windows 7 upgrade I would check the lenovo web site for any windows 7 specific drivers or even vista drivers or other info for this problem........ I needed specific drivers for other issues on newer thinkpad models for retail windows 7 installs/upgrades.

Sounds like a driver problem to me...........and you can check your hardware drivers via the device manager and system profiler.

If USB 2.0 continues to be an issue other then an extensive repair (motherboard) a PCMCIA USB adapter would be an inexpensive solution.

I would venture a guess that it is a "Thermal Heatpad" issue because of the use and the time of the laptop, most people could possibly fix this on their own. The problem would be to make sure you do not mix up the screws if you figure you might want to take the small risk. The heatpad has stretched under the heat and it not doing it's job of being a silicon gasket as best it can. Numerous Youtube videos hint at this common issue but only because it is generally a fan issue that most people see at first. I know i have one.
