Can I add another SSD drive?

My 2013 came with the 256GB Pci Flash drive. I want to add another SATA SSD, can I do this? I just want it as a separate drive and I don't plan on any kind of raid setup. Since it did not come with a SATA drive from the factory will there be power and data connections?

Yes, indeed you can! Just follow the guide here. You can choose to add either a 3.5" HDD/SSHD/SSD-HDD combo, or a 2.5" HDD/SSD/SSHD, but I don't believe there are SSD-HDD combo drives in that format.

Thanks! Do I need to worry about a temperature sensor of any kind since this would be a new drive in that bay?

Yes! You do.

Nope, not at all. All modern drives come with temperature sensors built right in!

EDIT: Yes, you do in fact. Please see @danj 's post below

@applepines101 - Well yes & no here...

HD's have them as they are used during the burn-in to monitor the drive. But, the port to access them is not set in a standard. Apple did go the the standards groups to lobby them to be accessible in a consistent way. Sadly, Apple was only able to get one group to agree. So today there is no common physical method only via SMART services which requires a hardware interrupt of the main CPU.

SSD's on the most part don't have them. Only the newer high density drives appear to have one that is only accessible via SMART.

Apple systems require direct access to the thermal sensors via SMC services which is why you need the in-line sensor when you replace the Apple custom drive or add in either a HD or SSD drive into an Apple system.

@danj Ahh, very interesting, I never knew that! Pardon me then, thank you for explaining it.

Yes, you can add in a 2.5" SATA SSD drive. But, there are some issues you'll encounter.

Before you even think about doing this review this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Logic Board Replacement. Sadly you'll need to remove the logic board to gain access to the SATA header block to take the SSD drive only plug off and plug in the needed SATA cable. Makes sure you use the correct tools to take the display off as many people damage it in the process of taking it off which would be an expensive mistake! I would recommend you get some spare adhesive strips before you start as well.

Your other choice here is to just swap out your current PCIe SSD with a larger one.
