MacBook Air Not Always Responding To Power Key!

My client brought in a MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2013) saying he could not get the thing to turn on. The charger LED would come on green then amber, but it would not respond to anything.

Stripped it down and didn't see any clear liquid damage or anything else out of the ordinary, slapped it back together and that dang thing turned on soon as I plugged in the battery!

Couldn't login with the built in keyboard or even an external for some reason, then the client informed me that the shift key was stuck. Traced that issue back to the trackpad for some reason. I reset the SMC and the machine seemed to respond properly to the power button during random tests over a 48 hour time span.

Ordered in a trackpad and replaced it, put together, booted when the battery was connected, shut it down, pressed power... nothing.

Reset the SMC, LED changes states but will NOT power on. Disconnected power and battery, plugged back in, boots up, get into OS, tap the power key, shuts down.. proves power key is functional.

Tap again, nothing. Only way this machine will restart is if the battery and adapter are unplugged and reconnected... besides that, runs like a dream. Reset PRAM and SMC, no change.

Thoughts?

What is the exact model you have here? Apple many quite a few very different versions and in two different sizes! We really need to know which one to help you.

Plug in the systems S/N here: EveryMac - Lookup. Once you find the system paste the URL link here so we can see it.

Thanks Dan, I'm aware, just forgot to include that data... I'm a tech with my own shop here as well.

What happens when you short across the power pads?

This is an oddity as well, it will not consistently start up with the internal pads either. The only way I seem to be able to get it to start up is unplug the battery and power adapter, plug both in... up she comes. You can restart it until the cows come home, but if you choose shut down... have to disconnect everything.

Disconnect the trackpad/keyboard ribbon cable (after you setup a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse) does that make a difference?

Does the power button not route through there? I believe so... but correct me if I'm wrong... then I certainly wouldn't be able to use the power key... will try and see if it makes a difference with the pads though.

The trick here is to use the power pads without the keyboard & trackpad connected. Does that make a difference?

That made no difference in regards to the behaviour of the power pads...
