Hi Doug,
Are the cartridges HP brand? HP has recently pushed firmware in a number of their printers which causes the printers to reject third-party brand ink cartridges.

I concur with @taylor_whitney on her suspicion about the firmware. The sad part on this is that it was not a recent update that caused this. Apparently HP has it programed in the firmware for non-HP cartridges to fail at a certain date.
