you may want to also consider that your battery has a dead cell and that no amount of charging is going to save that . Have you tested the voltage coming out of the alternator? .

How do you check to see if the voltage regulator is bad

The internal regulator in the computer may be out. Mine went out. Alt tested good, brand new battery, everything. I eventually just put an external regulator to bypass the cpu and everything worked properly.

common problem .. computer reading voltage requirement is broken inside.. new computer is very expensive to replace..put external voltage regulator powered by a key ON only power supply wire or battery will be dead while key is turned off, will work great.

The PCM only is $168 refurbished and comes programemmed based on your VIN#. 4 screws and 2 plugs easier to replace then jerry rigging your alternator. Also check the charging relay located below the battery.

I had this problem too. After struggling for days it turned out to be a corroded battery connector. Here's the story: Anyone know what fusible link part number I need -solved alternator

Looks like the field coil of the alternator isn't getting power.

There are 3 wires attached to the alternator. One is a big fat wire that goes to the battery, this is the alternator output. The other two wires feed power to the field coil.

You can check if the field coil is powered by connecting a multimeter to the terminals of the field coil, and starting the engine. Be careful to avoid getting caught by the alternator belt! With the engine running, there should be voltage across the terminals. Turn on the headlights to put some load on the battery, the voltage on the field coil should rise slightly.

If you don't see voltage on the field coil terminals, you might have a blown fuse. The field coil is powered by a box called Powertrain Control Module, and there are 3 fuses that might be of interest, numbered 6, 19, and 26 according to the schematic (see below). If these are all good, then you need to check the wiring between the PCM and the alternator, or the PCM itself may have a problem.

Another possibility is a bad Battery Temperature Sensor. If this sensor tells the PCM that the battery is too hot, the PCM might refuse to power the field coil 'cause it thinks bad things might happen if the alternator tries to charge an overheated battery.

great info , just one question should i see VAC or VDC on the two cables (field coil )

how does ASD relay works in this system?

完成的

bunnysamra77 not sure where this fits with the original question/ answers. you will need us way more details about why, when , on what vehicle, etc. Commonly the PCM needs a Cam & Crank shaft signal. If it does not see these then it de-energizes the ADS relay (automatic shutdown relay). The ADS relays powers the fuel pump relay.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem with my wife's grand Cherokee, if your alternator and battery are good and all connections are good then it's the voltage regulator in the computer that is bad, this is what is wrong with my wife's jeep, I'm going to fit an external voltage regulator to the body of the car, I'm going to splice the cables from the ones on the rear of the alternator to the voltage regulator which instead of the computer controlling the voltage the alternator kicks out, it will be the external voltage regulator that controls the alternator power output, this is all you need to do to fix your charge problem, I'm going to order a voltage regulator when I get home.

I'm sorry but my mother's 98 Cherokee limited 4.0 L. 4x4 won't stay charged its weird be driving down the road and all of sudden ,power on battery instrument cluster goes to 6 volts r 1/4 on gauge. Then maybe 2 miles later leaves you stranded but sometime I can hit the gas n rev some n it'll go back to 12 but eventually back to 1/4 on gauge then dies what so y'all think would appreciate it so would the mother guys .

Johnathon Beatty, check the negative battery terminal to block ground, you are describing exactly what happened to me last week and it turned out the ground was shot and the alternator was bad. Not sure if the bad ground caused the alternator to go bad or not. My ground was still attached to the block, but the wire attached to the terminal where it was bolted to block was rotten, real rubbery and a flat copper color, not shiny. Put a new end on and cleaned block area solved the problem, then I had to go buy a new alternator. Oh, and my firewall-to-valve-cover strap ground was also broken, I put a new one of those on as well.

i have similar problems but turned into a nightmare somehow,i bought a second hand jeep 2006 crd 2.8 diesel excellent condition inside outside engine sound is almost perfectly balanced i noticed something off bout the alternator its smaller than what was supposed to be there, long story short i think they jimmy rigged it cause clutch system was braced from the small 2 wire plug at the back of the alt only one wire was on instead of 2,i bought the correct alt for the specific model changed the mounting bracket reconnected everything back runs ballanced and........... not charging at all im thinking it mivht have something to do with the fact that where is the other wire thats supposed to together to complete the 2 wired pluggie at the back of alt now not my area of expertise hoping someone could give me pointers plsssssssss

Hi Jaco,

There is only one small wire on my 2007 Cherokee and not 2 as many other posts refer to and my car has been running for years like this until it stopped charging last week. One of the auto electricians in Brisbane told me that there will be one wire when there is a built in voltage regulator in the alternator and 2 wires when the voltage regulator is built into the ECM. In both cases the ECM controls the charging.

Did you check the ground wire between the car body and the engine, they can corrode and brake, then battery won’t charge.
