Blank screen after replacement

I've just replaced the screen on an IPad Air 2, I am testing it before final assembly and the screen is completely blank. I have plugged the iPad into iTunes and it is recognised correctly although I can't do anything with it because the device is locked and, of course, I can't use the screen.

I have tried reattaching the old screen (minus the home button), this was broken but produced a distorted image, however now it isn't producing anything visible at all.

I believe that the three connectors are in place correctly, they all gave the usual 'snap' as they went in.

I'm looking for any suggestions of what might cause this to happen. I have transferred the home button from the broken screen and obviously that is s delicate operation, could a blank screen point to a problem with the home button or should the screen fire up without one?

Did you turn off the iPad and unplug the battery before disconnecting and connecting the front display assembly? (Digitizer and LCD flex cable plugs)

No I didn't. I followed the teardown instructions which show the screen being removed with the battery still connected. I have also done iPhone battery replacements where is is not possible to disconnect the battery until the screen has been removed. I see that in the comments on the teardown page someone does recommend disconnecting the battery before the screen but I hadn't seen that.

I was replacing the iPad 10.5 air 3 generation I was changing the lcd and now there is no image but the iPad is on is just black but I can Hera the sound

If you encounter this blank screen due to having replaced the screen while the iPad is on, it's most likely just a soft reset it needs - power + home button for 10 secs, and it should boot up normally..:)

I can't say I'd advise doing so, but from time to time the iPad comes on while working on it, and you can't shut it down with no screen on it - reboot, and it's good..

Also, if you screw the battery-screw out, and take a plastic tool and place between battery and logicboard, you should be able to lift the logicboard 1 or 2mm, which is enough for it to loose connection, and turn off..:)

check to see if the flex for the home button is undamaged.

then check the connector on the board to make sure that's ok.

check for board also to see if any small components are missing

Hi -- thanks for the reply. I found that the ribbon cable which connects the Home button to the rear of the screen was not fully home. I managed to get it a fraction of a mm further in and the Home button now functions as a Home button but...

...now the Touch ID doesn't seem to work. In the Settings it says that no fingerprints are defined and all the options are ate to 'off', When I try to enable one of the options, such as iTunes, I get a dialogue box saying 'Failed'. The option to set a fingerprint is greyed out.

btw I have moved the Home button from the old LCD screen so it should be correctly paired with the logic board.

Looks like I have some more investigating to do!

Found comments elsewhere in the forum advising a reset. I actually did the 9.3 update and now my Touch ID works perfectly (including remembering the fingerprint and all the settings).

I'm fast running out of issues to fix following this repair!

Since you cant see anything now try removing the screw from the battery and slide a thin hard plastic to unplug the battery connector and then put back the screw and the lcd and screen back and turn on the ipad if you see an apple logo good if not you shortage the backlight.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am struggling to disconnect the battery and can't find any guides on line. I have removed the screw on the connector but it seems that to separate the battery from the connector the two have to move apart and atm they are both securely fixed. Anyone know whether this is covered in any 'how to...' guides?

OK, a new update, I have reassembled the iPad for the about 100th time and the screen is now working perfectly. Can't think of anything that could have made it come good but there you go.

The problem I now have is that the Home button isn't working at all...

Hi we've had the same problem, got our screen working now thanks to your useful comments, but like you our home button no longer works, was wondering if you solved this issue? And what you had to do?

If hard reset does not work and you have to reopen the iPad:

If you unscrew the battery and lift up with your fingernail (DO NOT USE ANYTHING METAL) or a plastic gift card it will work best. Do not bend the motherboard too much! Sometimes you do not need the plastic piece but it is the safest way to do it.

If it is not turning on afterwards and your LCD/digitizer connections are all on properly check to see if the screw is too tight on the battery connector.

*Sometimes if the screw to the battery is too tight it will hinder the iPad from turning on.*
