replacing the hdd in the apple G4
What would be the effect of replacing the hdd. preloaded with an os.

The hard drive is certainly replaceable. You can go larger and faster. The preloaded OS is questionable, it's according to what system it has on it, if it will work on your machine, what machine it was formatted on. Can you be more specific?
