Updates aren't being read
I've turned my notebook on several times, it won't pass 6% updates. Stuck for hours.

Boot up holding down the Option key and go to the Utilities partition and run Disk Doctor.
Prior to this were you getting a lot of beach balls? What OS X are you running?
