Vizio colors have faded

I have a Vizio 46" HDTV. Recently, I turned the TV on and the colors are faded. The images are not disturbed, just the color. All of the colors look more pastel; maybe calling them 'washed out' is a better explanation. I am using HDMI cables and get the same faded colors when watching cable and DVD.

Update (10/12/2015)

Thanks! The model number is: VW46L FHDTV10A. I have attached a few photos to hopefully illustrate the 'washed out' colors which look very pastel...certainly NOT the bright HD colors.

I know this is an old post, but I'm having what looks like a similar issue with my Vizio e55-e2. I do not have a separate t con board so I replaced the main board. Picture is still faded/washed out. Though the menu screens still have dark blacks and isn't washed out. Wondering if this is a faulty cable or ribbon. Do you happen to know if the ribbon or one of the cables to the main board might be the culprit?

Chris, the larger Vizio sets had a recall on this exact issue related to a faulty chipset. Might be worthwhile to explore this avenue. If we know what exact model your TV is, we might get more info on that.

Update (10/12/2015)

Okay does not look like it suffered from the same chipset issues. I would suggest that you add a couple of images of what your display looks like with your question. Use this guide for that. It is possible that you have a bad inverter board, a bad T-con board or a few capacitors that may have failed. Hope you have a few tools and taken the back off already:-)

Update (10/12/2015)

It is difficult to make a definite diagnosis but from what I can see, I would replace (repair) the T-con board. Check on here for parts or repair of your board.

Hi there, I am experiencing the same issue and was going to buy a replacement T-con board for my Vizio e480i-B2. Out of interest, why did you come to the conclusion that it was this board in particular? Thanks!

@ellensimmons that is the board that should have the Gamma IC on it :-) The Gamma IC is responsible for the quality of the picture

@oldturkey03 okay, thank you for clarifying. When I checked the settings though, the Gamma was still sort of “changing” the picture (albeit not fixing the issue, but it didn’t seem to have completely failed). Would you still consider the gamma IC to be the root cause in that case?

@ellensimmons yes, I would.

Hi @Rmt141,

Just verifying that you tried adjusting the "Contrast" setting or any other setting in the TV's "picture" menu area to see if this improved the picture at all, as you never mentioned it?

Here’s a link to the user manual for the TV. On p.13 it shows all the picture setting options

Also given that it is OK when viewing the menu screens, have you tried a different input, input type e.g. HDMI, Component video, Composite video, different cable(s) or even a different signal source e.g. a dvd player to check if the picture is different or not, just to hopefully narrow down the problem?

I only suggested this as the hardware for viewing the picture on the screen is the same from the mainboard to the screen when viewing the menus as when viewing a signal from an external source and you have already replaced the mainboard

Thanks for the response. Yes, I've tried to adjust the picture and tried different inputs. I also did a factory reset. Nothing changes the faded/washed out look. It looks very similar to the pictures added by the original poster.
