How do I stop Ford Mustang 1969 Boss 429 tire hop

I have a vintage mustang boss 429 . Ive completely restored the car to as close to original as I can and looked for something to help with tire hop that would be period correct and not stand out or look out of place . The car produces a lot of horsepower and I'm having a hard time getting it to the ground . A friend told me this form could answer any question .So here it is any Ideas

Nice Car Ross! Did you stick with the ordinal bias ply tires or are you using radials . There are Shelby traction bars available that look like this

not as loud a look as square traction bars but they may do the trick you may also want to install an adjustable panhard bar . The tire idea is good but its more about the tire compound not so much the width . If your looking for smoke shows a harder compound is easier to light up but if your looking to launch quicker softer is better. Hope this helps

This i can live with . Its doesn't look that big and who knows it may have been an option , I'll have to check. I'll also look into the tires, I'm running Goodyear radials right now , don't really want to go to bias ply

Do you have an actual boss 429 motor or do you have a 429 cobra jet. Just curious as there were so few actual 429 boss motors with the hemi style head

I have the 429 super cobra jet . the body is an actual 429 but the motor is long gone I would love to have the original motor it would make the car worth a fortune not to mention changing the plugs easier. I have to lift the motor to pull the plugs with this motor. Its shoehorned into the car

I added the Shelby traction bars this week and say an immediate improvement. They actually look like they belong on the car . The car still has a bit of a skip on cement but on asphalt its good . Thank you all for your input

Ross, that is definitely an issue with an engine like yours. What causes the wheel hop is that the axle try twist the leaf springs and the leaf springs fight back causing the tires to hop off of the ground. The rapid switching between grippy acceleration and wheelspin is causing wheel hop. The wheel can move with respect to the chassis because the suspension bushings flex. Sometimes simply replacing old rubber bushings with new rubber bushings is all that is needed. On a car that possesses more horsepower than intended, upgrading to stiffer materials like nylon or polyurethane may be required. Anyway, by simply upgrading your bushings, the suspension bushings will not flex as much under strong acceleration, the wheel will not move far forward in the wheel well, the toe of the car will not appreciably change, and your tires will not lose grip and there will be no more wheel hop. Of course you could also use traction bars to keep keep the springs from wrapping up ;-)

Stiffer bushings was the first thing I did and as far as traction bars I want to keep the look as original as possible. Ive heard that a wider or skinnier tire might also help any thoughts on that. Thanks for your suggestions

Ross, sorry tires wont make a difference with wheel hop. Your Mustang will easily overcome those tires too. It just got to much oomph :-) Have you considered to check with a suspension shop? Some of those guys have been in the business for a while and might have a trick up their sleeves
