How To Repair Static in Headphone Port?

Hi. I'm working on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Model 2.33 GHz 15" laptop. There is a lot of crunchy static coming out of the headphone port when I attach a 1/8 stereo cable to run it through 2 Boss powered monitors. I have to turn and twist the cable in the port to eliminate the static and make sure sound is coming from L/R channels. I tried 3 different cables to make sure it wasn't a bad cable, but the problem occurs the same from each cable.

Is it safe to spray a contact cleaner through the port and see if that corrects the distortion issue? Do these ports/jacks normally have to be replaced rather than repaired?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Steve

Hello Steve, The audio jack is soldered to the logic board and is a non-standard size making replacement almost impossible without replacing the logic board. Your best solution in my opinion is a modified version of the previous poster - str8sj408's. First remove power including battery.

Remove the top cover so as to gain access to the back of the jack and spray contact cleaner through the jack from the logic board side avoiding getting spray on the logic board. Move the plug on and out and twist it as well. Use canned air and thoroughly dry the jack and any overspray. Reassemble and test. Good luck Ralph

Bad idea--spaying any liquid into a working computer could short out and destroy the logic board.
