inverter cable or LCD?

Bought a fixer upper with what I thought would be a display cable problem. Once I received it, I can see the images on the top side but the lower part of the screen looks blank. I have an inverter cable ordered to install. I have another parts unit here that I believe the LCD is OK (bad logic board). Should I switch the LCD when I switch the inverter?

Yes switch the complete LCD display (with cables) from the dead (logic board) unit to your problematic iBook. Everything should match if the two machines are 12" models under the 1.33 ghz model.

But before doing the swap, connect your iBook to an external monitor and check if the GPU is OK. From the symptoms you described the problem is not an inverter (lightning) issue but could be a video (LVDS cable), a GPU or a LCD related problem.

up and running. Original problem must have been the inverter board with a problem screen. Now I have one working unit and lots of leftovers! Thanks.

I would try the inverter board and the display data cable first before going to the expense of a new LCD.

Rdkl - here's my very first question on iFixit. My customer does not want to pop for the $700 + to replace the LCD and not even know if that is the problem so he's using an external. See if this gives you a better description: top half of screen is greyed out

Here's another with the same problem as mine: iMac Intel 24" (1st gen silver case) LCD Screen Replacement?

Wow, very interesting...thanks for the links. Here's how I'd break it down: You know the GPU is good because external video works, therefore the problem is in the screen hardware and cabling. You know the LVDS cable is good because there is a faint image in the dark part of the screen. From my experience, inverters and inverter cables are "dumb" devices that either work or don't work, and since they are providing some light, I'd vote that they are working. I haven't worked with these particular iMacs, but I like Lemerise's assessment that one of the two bulbs in the screen has gone out. Since the inverter and inverter cable are succeeding in getting some light to the screen, and one of the bulbs is lit (proving that the inverter system is working), it makes sense that one of the two bulbs is dead, and therefore that the screen needs to be replaced (unless you can replace the bad bulb in the screen, which I've seen people do, but it's tricky and probably pretty risky, especially with a screen like this).

rdkl - I've gone through a lot of the screen questions and tagged them "half screen problem". Do a search and see if you think your theory is confirmed.

Maybe I'm not understanding your description of what is going on, but are you saying the top half of the screen is fully lit and has an image, while the bottom half of the screen is black? Sounds like a damaged screen to me. The inverter and inverter cable generally either work 100% or they don't work at all, and I've never seen a situation where they only succeeded in lighting half the screen, and the inverter or cable was at fault. If light is getting to the screen, and half the screen appears dead, it's probably a screen issue. Is the dead half of the screen 100% black with no image, or is it just faint, and you see a faint image?

Yes, if you have a replacement screen to test with, then by all means swap that out before even thinking of replacing cables (which involves opening up the hinge, which you don't want to do if you don't have to). For instructions on replacing the LCD panel, take a look at this video tutorial on my site:

1/2 screen issues do exist. I personally have two unanswered and I know of two other questions concerning this very issue. None have been resolved. All different types of Macs.

Wow, that's interesting...I've not personally seen one. I guess the question is, as I mention above, does the screen appear completely blank and dead without light and image (like a screen that is cracked and has dead black spots), or is it dark but has a faint image, like a screen without a backlight? And when the screen is replaced, does the 1/2 screen issue persist with a known-good screen? It seems bizarre to me that a GPU would be bad in such a way that half the screen would be permanently black. I'm not saying it can't happen...just that it seems odd.

Currenty, the screen is exhibiting a backlighting problem so I have an inverter cable ordered. I had already ordered a display cable from the previous owners comments. My comments as to the symptoms are prior to tearing into the unit. From othe comments, I'll experiment with the second unit's (same model 1.0 Ghz) LCD for the repair. Thanks.
