Can I upgrade to 8 GB RAM and a bigger hard drive?

My question: I was looking through some of the RAMs you sell and some descriptions said I could use 4 GB RAM (8 in total) for my mid 2007 (2.16 Ghz / 1 GB RAM) Macbook, but others said it wasn't compatible. Has anyone upgraded to this RAM successfully?

Second question: Is there a limit to the hard drive that I can buy and install on my mac?

By the way, the Model is A1181 (mid 2007).

There are two distinct versions of systems that came out in '07. Can you give us the last three digits of your serial number so we can identify if you have the standard model or the Santa Rosa model

Dan, in the 2.16 MacBook just a black & white one.

Both the standard and Santa Rosa models have only two memory slots. Both of these systems have limits on how much memory you can add the standard models supports upto 4 GB of RAM (two 2GB modules) The Santa Rosa is able to support 6 GB of RAM (one 4GB and one 2GB module).

  • Your system is the Standard one which will only support 4 GB of RAM.

You do need to make sure your systems firmware is upto date. Follow this Apple TN: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

As to the HD you can use any sized drive but the drives SATA speed must match the systems SATA I/O port speed. Today its hard to find new SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) standard HD drives which is what your system needs (either model). Most HD's available to day are SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) or SATA III (6.0 Gb/s).

But you do have an option here! That also can give your system a bit more zip than a straight HD thats a SSHD (hybrid HD). Seagate makes a nice one and it has auto SATA speed detection. Here's a write up that describes what a SSHD is: Seagate Laptop SSHD. And heres the spec sheet for the drive: Seagate laptop SSHD spec sheet. Note the line item SATA Transfer Rates Supported (Gb/s) where all three SATA speeds are listed 6.0/3.0/1.5. Make sure what ever drive you get can work in your system like this one.

Thank you! That helps a lot. I would like to increase my MB's speed more than file storage so do you suggest that I only update the RAM. Also the tech specs for the model A1181 says it holds up to 2 RAM but I have read elsewhere (here) and You have also said I can add up to 4GB . Hopefully the 4GB works.

Yes, 4 GB of RAM (two 2GB modules) will work. Give it a try then look at upgrading the HD next. A 1 TB drive is more than big enough for most people.

Hi, its been a while. I was wondering if you could tell me which RAM chip it is that I should buy (there are several options here).

You'll need: Two 200-pin SO-DIMM Modules - 2GB PC2-5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 SDRAM.
