Will I lose my files if I replace 820-1975-A iPod logic board?

I need to replace the logic board part #820-1975-A in a 5.5gen video iPod. I have heard that I must use the same part#, not a compatible part, or I will need to re-format the hard drive and thus lose some files that I can't replace. Does anyone know if this is true?

To clarify, the reason I ask is because the 5th gen video iPod uses part #820-1763-A. Most websites selling logic boards do not specify which version is for sale, but just state that theirs will replace either of the above mentioned part numbers. Often the 5th gen and 5.5 gen video iPods are treated interchangeably by parts dealers.

Your files should all be on your computer. It's usually best to replace parts with the identical originals, your just asking for trouble by trying to switch parts.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the computer with my itunes account crashed shortly before my iPod logic board went down, so the only place I have these files is on the iPod.

Side note-you can buy ZIF usb adapters for very cheap on eBay and other places online that would allow you to retrieve the files from your iPod drive, without an iPod.

If you have access to a laptop with a ZIF connector, put your iPod drive in there and boot from a linux live disk. You should be able to pull your files then.

that is a very complicated way of doing things.Yes, it will work, but you will now have to disassemble another piece of equipment. A USB-to_Zif addapter cost around $5 and will make it much easier and safer.

ALTERNATELY, free programs such as Floola and iDump exist for this purpose, to pull files from/backup an iPod.
