When I tried to restore the ipod by hooking it up to the computer and itunes and hitting restore, it wanted to do an update. It cant do the update since it needs to be in the ipod and i cant remember my password to get in it. What do I do?

alex, try to unplug your ipod hold the start button at the same time plug in your ipod. Or go into DFU Mode and restore.
DFU Mode
Connect your iPod to your computer
Turn your iPod Off
Press and hold the power button for 3 Seconds
While continuing to hold the Power button, press the home button as well for 10 seconds
While holding down the home button, release the power button for another 10 seconds
iTunes should detect the iPod in recovery mode, press OK, and restore your iPod, from this point forward you may release the buttons. If you have not reached this point, then you have not entered DFU Mode. Caution, this will delete your data.

this works with iphones so i think i will work.
turn ipod off, connect to mac/pc WHILE holding the home button.
if still no fix, put in recovery or dfu mode
