What resources do you use to find broken Apple laptops?

Hi! I have a business repairing/refurbishing Mac laptops, and I'm always looking to find broken machines via any means possible. I've used CraigsList extensively, Kijiji.com (eBay's version of CraigsList), advertised in local publications, etc. I've also started a FaceBook page and found that "friending" a community of customers/sellers has yielded good results. I also buy broken machines from equipment recyclers in the area who get laptops donated to them from schools and businesses.

I'm just curious to hear where you have been able to find broken Apple laptops and laptop parts. Forgive me if this seems to be a shameless business-related post, which I suppose it probably is, but I do think discussing the acquisition of parts and broken laptops is probably a relevant subject for many on this site.

Thanks!

You need to build yourself a sellers network, people who will sell you their used/broken machines. These guys owns repair shops and resells broken machines bought from their customers or manage equipments liquidation for corporations. Ebay is a great place to meet these sellers. You have to contact them and deal with them outside of ebay. They will be glad to avoid paying ebay fees and sell directly to you. Look for sellers who list many broken machines and parts, contact them privately and try to establish a business relation with them.

That's a good idea. I've found many people/companies on eBay for parts, but for some reason I haven't looked for broken machines. Lately I've established relationships with several local recyclers that have gotten me a good supply, so expanding further hasn't been too much of an issue, but if I get short on machines I'll try the eBay angle. I'm also working on expanding my web presence so that people can find me online, ask for a quote, and send me a machine.

I usually find and repair several computers a year to give to kids who can't afford one and occasionally one to sell. My main source of complete machines is ebay but I use places like ifixit, laptopaid and others for parts. I find its becoming more difficult to find G3 powerbooks and have been going to G3 and G4 iBooks lately. I generally try to stay away from CL because of the scammers. You might also google Apple parts machines--sometimes I find something interesting that way. Ralph

You might consider checking out http://www.freecycle.org , the hub for Freecycle networks all around the country through which people simply give stuff away. I'm not sure if it's accepted practice or not in the Freecycle community to take stuff for resale. But since the whole point is to keep things out of landfills, I'd be inclined to imagine it's okay...

I like eBay, though it can take a very long time to get the right parts. You definitely do think like me because I love refurbishing laptops! I use Craigslist to ask for parts machines, but I haven't yet gotten any responses. Haha. Sorry if this was of little help. :|
