PowerBook g4 has startup chime no image

My powerbook g4 15" 133mhz 1gb ram 120 gb hard drive starts with the startup chime but gets no screen image. Screen does become lit up. So it looks like display has power. I hear the dvd drive at startup but don't hear the hard drive spin up. Hooking up an external monitor produces no image. I bought the machine on ebay about a year ago. It came with system 10.5.8 but I don't have the discs to re-install. I do have 10.4.11. Is it the hard drive. I have another and could replace. Or is it the logic board, probably not worth fixing. Thanks.

You have a bad Video Card or Logic Board. If the problem were the internal display chain the external monitor should have worked.

Thanks. I was afraid of that, but thought I would get an answer from someone who knows more than I do.

The first thing to do is power on holding down the option key. If you get the option menu, you know it's not a video chip or video hardware issue, and your computer is likely fine aside from whatever is going on with the hard drive. There's no reason to mess with the hardware until you've tried this. It's also possible the HD is fine, but just needs an OS reinstall. It is odd that you don't mention eventually getting a flashing folder icon...the lack of this tends to point in the direction of video hardware. But again, start with the option key. A PRAM issue is unlikely.

These PowerBooks also have chronic issues with bad RAM slots, and they are also touchy as far as what RAM they will take, especially if you have two modules that aren't identical. A white screen is not a typical symptom of a bad slot, but in order to be thorough and to rule it out, you should power on with one slot empty, and then with the other slot empty.

The white screen indicates to me a failed hard drive. Disconnect the hard drive and see if it will boot from the original DVD. If you do not have an original system DVD (this machine shipped with 10.3.3) Apple may be able to replace it for $16 plus shipping an tax. If you are trying to use a gray DVD from another machine, those are machine specific and will not work. A 10.3, 10.4 or 10.5 retail system installation disk will work on your machine.

Please check this out before spending a lot of money.

It could also be a corrupted PRAM as the battery has died. Try resetting it as well Apple TN - NVRAM & PRAM, Don't forget to replace the PRAM battery. Otherwise, I agree the HD is likely bad.
