Battery will not charge, what is the problem?

Just replaced battery ( thinking this was the problem ) but no success, so, replaced hard drive as well in my iPod classic 20GB. Now it won't start up or charge at all, plugged it in to my PC and it was recognized said to restore which i did, was then asked to plug in to charger to finish restore but nothing happens when i do this. Anyone got any ideas what the problem is ?

Hi, I too have the 4th Generation iPod & replaced battery but my port has come off & now unable to use. The ports that suppose to replace has ears & mine does not! Where can I purchase the correct port?

i SOLVED THE 'NOT CHARGING' ISSUE BY USING A 10W USB APPLE CUBE CHARGER. THE 4TH GEN CLASSIC SHOULD CHARGE ON A USB CUBE BUT MUST NEED 10 WATTS.

James Verlaque, you did not tell us exactly which iPod you have. I am making an assumption that it is a 4th gen iPod (photo). You must use a firewire AC adapter to finalize the restore process. A USB AC adapter will not work. From what you tell us, the iPod is doing everything the way it is supposed to function.

Yes you are right it is a 4th gen, i don't have a firewire adapter but even when i plug it into the USB AC adapter it doesn't charge at this point either. But why should a firewire adapter make the difference ?

Because the iPod 4th Generation still works best with it. It syncs, but does not finish it's restore process without Firewire. I have 6 of them and do use a Firewire adapter to finish the restore process. While the iPod does technically charge over FireWire, the port that you're using has to be able to supply the necessary voltage. Some FireWire ports, as well as USB ports, particularly those found on laptops, don't necessarily supply a charging current, and therefore the iPod won't charge from such a port. The port needs to be powered in order for the iPod to charge from the USB port. Give it a try and let us know. Also, check this answer iPod only shows power adapter being plugged in to wall outlet? as well as a few others.

Thanks for all your help, as i said i don't have a firewire wall charger and tried my usb wall charger which didn't fix it either, but, i plugged it in to my istation and voila it is charging and now working. Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem. Thanks again. James

Are you guys still available? I just found my 2005 4th gen iPod model A1099 and plugged it in first to try and charge it to my vintage mac book air and it charged. Then I waited a week to get the proper headphones and plugged it into a wall unit. However, the battery died and I called Genius Bar, Mac Life store, 360 wireless, and googled everything about battery replacement and even ordered new battery. Then I went back to plugging it into my Mac book air and it’s working fine. I figure it’s because as you say, it needs the power boost from the computer.

Yes, as the manual states that the iPod included a firewire charger and a USB sync cable. The USB syncs songs, but doesn't charge it. That's why the firewire charging cord was included with the kit. Most of us bought the iPod but we didn't know what was going on till we find a solution for that problem. I had to charge my iPod from an fm transmitter, then I found out that I need a firewire charger. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Um, the FireWire cable was only required to charge the 1st-3rd gen iPods. The 4th gen (his iPod) did not have a FireWire cable or port. Instead the included USB cable pullged into the FireWire AC adapter.

If you don't already have it fixed, I plugged my iPod into a USB power bank and it finished the restore instantly. I don't know about the charging thing, though. I still have that problem.

Also, a FireWire charger is a special USB AC adapter released with the iPod Classic. It is a big white brick, but it is much more powerful.

You absolutely don’t need the firewire charger to finish the restore process. I just did the iflash modification with the SD card and the restore finished fine with one of those cube iphone chargers.

I experimented with different wall chargers and just a normal USB /30 pin. I finally got it to charge. It took 8 hours but it did charge with out the FireWire. I also completed the restore using a power bank without the FireWire.
