The Basics
Before undertaking any of the more time-consuming solutions below, these are a few fundamentals to get you started:
- Restart your your phone. It sounds basic, but this is a troubleshooting fundamental for good reason.
- Try a different charger, cable or power outlet.
If your phone is giving an error about liquid in the charge port, take a look at at that page for more relevant fixes.
Use a wireless charger if your phone supports it. The circuitry is separate from wired charging, and may work even if charging with a cable does not.
Power Source Too Weak
Solution: Use a compatible charger.
The amount of power the charger can output is strongly related to the rate a device can charge. Look for text on the wall block. Flip to whichever side has electrical data and look for key information.
- Output Voltage and Amperage: The adapter may be capable of outputting multiple voltages, including 5V DC—typical voltage for USB charging. Higher voltages are utilized to support fast charge standards. The current (Amperage) rating will be listed per voltage.
- Wattage: Some manufacturers, like Apple, list this plainly on the adapter. If yours does not, calculate it yourself! Wattage is Volts multiplied by Amps. In the case of a basic Apple iPhone charger, the USB brick is rated for 5V and 1A. Therefore, it would be a 5 Watt charger (5x1=5).
- Save some brain cells and use a wattage calculator if your numbers aren’t as easy.
For most Samsung phones, at least 10 Watts is recommended. Less than this may result in slow charger warnings or no charge at all. Reference Samsung's recommendations if you're not sure which charger is best.
Debris in the Charge Port
Solution: Clean the charge port.
Lint or other bits of rubbish tend to get caught in ports. After repeated charging, debris gets compacted toward the back of the port. This can prevent the cable from making proper contact.
- Inspect your charge port. Use a flashlight to improve visibility.
- Check the fit of your cable. Does the USB-C or micro USB plug sit flush with the bottom of the phone? It should. If it's loose, or only charges when you wiggle the cable, start with a cleaning.
- If there is debris in the port, use the custom cotton swab method or other non conductive probe to clear it out. You may need to shave down the toothpick for your custom swab so it fits into the port.
- Blowing compressed air into the port can free up any loosened bits.
Be as gentle as you can while cleaning. The pins and plastic "tongue" in the port are sensitive to damage. Taking care here can prevent you from having to replace the port instead.
Corrupt or Buggy Software
Solution: Update software or remove problematic app.
Poorly optimized or buggy software can be a battery killer. Your phone may be charging but it may be unable to charge rapidly enough to overcome energy consumption. If your device is hot when not plugged in, or the battery is draining quickly, be sure to check for software changes.
- Check battery consumption. In the settings, chose the option for battery (it may include other items depending on the version of Android on your device). This menu contains a list of apps utilizing the the battery.
- Uninstall any apps in the overlap of high usage and recently updated. If you can charge properly once uninstalled, try reinstalling the app.
- Pro Tip: You can use browser versions of many of the apps in the app store if you have to uninstall an app you use often during testing.
- Check for updates to all apps as well as the operating system.
- A fresh OS install is a drastic measure to address battery life, but could still be helpful, especially if some corruption is contributing to the issue. Explore hardware options first, but if those do not resolve, reset your device and retest.
Battery Malfunction
Solution: Replace the battery.
No rechargeable battery lasts forever. Even if you follow best charging practices, eventually the materials will be consumed. Batteries can be damaged in numerous ways, and are a prime suspect for charging woes.
- Check your battery’s health using the Samsung Members app. If it's not already installed, download it from the Google Play store. Under the support tab, select phone diagnostics and run the battery test.
- Look for signs of battery swelling. Separation of the enclosure, localized screen discoloration, or unexplained bowing of the housing are indicators of battery expansion.
- Recently repaired your device? Disconnect the battery, then reconnect it. An improperly connected battery can result in unexpected charging behavior.
- If diagnostic tests fail or visual signs of failure are present, replace the battery.
Faulty Charge Port
Solution: Replace the charging daughterboard or the charge port.
If the port is definitely dry, and free of conductive debris, it’s possible the port, or the internal assembly it is attached to is faulty. Due to its proximity to the edge of the device, and a plethora of possible entry points, liquid tends to creep in here regardless of water resistance.
- Inspect the port thoroughly. Use a flashlight for better visibility. Can you see any bent pins on the interior?
- If you find damage, or nothing else has fixed your issue, replace the charge port daughterboard. Be sure to get one that matches your exact model since these often contain networking components as wellk. Your cell service may not work properly with the incorrect board.
- To truly check the port’s integrity you’ll need some magnification, or a USB ammeter. A charge port that’s working properly should be allowing current to be drawn through it to charge the battery.
- If your charge port is attached to the main motherboard, you'll need some soldering know-how to replace it. Or find someone with the soldering skills to remove the existing port, and install a new one. Otherwise you'll be stuck replacing the whole motherboard.
