Guitar does not sound right

"I tried to play it but it doesn't sound like it was before!"

Strings may have lost its luster

If the strings seem difficult to play, try to replace the strings. For future reference, try to wipe down the new strings after each use so that it could last longer.

The strings are buzzing

Tighten any hardware found in the guitar. It may just be some lose screws that are holding the strings. It is important for the strings to have the correct resistance to be able to play the correct chord.

The guitar could be out of tuned

If the two solutions above did not work, then the guitar may just be out of tune. I would find or buy a tuner and use it as a guide to tune the guitar to its proper tones. See "There's something wrong with my strings" to learn how.

Frets may need to be leveled

If you have done all three of the solutions, then the problem may be from the frets. See "My frets need to be leveled" to learn how.

My frets need to be leveled

"My guitar started buzzing, I fixed the strings but it is still happening!"

One of the frets sits higher than the rest

This would cause you to file the frets. This will require a very long file because it is important to file all the frets together not just the one that is uneven. This should ensure that all your frets are even.

There is a hump in the fingerboard

This is caused by dryness. Just let your guitar sit for a while and give it the proper humidity. This should bring it back to its original form.

Humidity did not help

Try to level it, if this does not work then the finger board will need to be replaced or be repaired by an expert to plane and re-fret it.

There's something wrong with my strings

Any problems you may have regarding to your stings

It may require tuning

Buy a tuner and play each string in front of the tuner. Each string has to be adjusted to its right note. Each string can be adjusted my turning the knobs of each strings that can be found at the end of the guitar. Be careful with adjusting it too much as the strings could just rip in half.

The string ripped in half

This would mean replacing the string. Find an instrument store and buy the string that ripped. Thickest is Low E, then A, then D, then G, then B and then the thinnest string is High E.

To replace, place the end of the string that has a hole and put it inside its proper placement in the bridge. Grab the other end of the string and wrap it around the knob with a slight resistance in between. Then tune the string by turning the knob until the string has the right amount of resistance to play the note.

Guitar looks worn out

"I don't like how my guitar looks, it is working fine but is starting to look old!"

Guitar looks dull and dirty

Use a cotton cloth and apply some guitar polish. Make sure to wipe in the same direction so that it doesn't leave any streaks.

Guitar looks greasy and disgusting

Use a cloth and apply some jewelers' polish on the guitar. Make sure to wipe in the same direction so that it doesn't leave any streaks.

Guitar is starting to crack due to too much moisture absorption

Control the humidity in which your guitar is located in. Guitars are made of wood so it would need to be in a room temperature of 65 to 75 degrees.

Guitar is becoming hard to play

"Sometimes it buzzes and sometimes it is just really hard to play!"

The strings are difficult to push down or strum

This may be caused by a high action which means that there are too much distance in between the strings and the frets. This would mean that the saddles would have to be cut down to the appropriate height. Saddles should be less than 1/32 inch or more than 3/16 inches about the bridge. It is recommended to consult with an expert and possible have them cut down the saddle for a more accurate result.

The strings continue to buzz

This may be caused by a low action which means that there is little to no distance between the strings and the frets. This would mean that the saddles would have to be replaced completely. It is recommended to consult with an expert to find the correct saddle that is perfectly matched on your guitar and techniques.
