Chromebook will not turn on

Pressing the power button doesn’t turn the Chromebook on.

Battery not charged enough

Check the battery indicator to see if it’s flashing. Keep your Chromebook plugged in for at least half an hour before starting it up again.

Chrome OS is damaged

Disconnect the laptop from the charger and leave it alone for at least 24 hours. After 24 hours of no charging, plug the charger back into the laptop. A screen should pop up saying that Chrome OS is damaged. Follow the on-screen instructions to repair it.

Laptop screen will not turn on

The computer is definitely on, but the screen isn’t.

Chromebook is in a sleeping state

Try pressing any buttons on the keyboard or try dragging your finger on the trackpad to see if the screen turns on. Give the Chromebook a few seconds to wake up.

Faulty Screen Connection

Remove the screws around the perimeter of the bottom of the Chromebook and underneath the rubber grips. Pry open the bottom of the Chromebook. Check if the two black ribbon cables (the very thin wide cables) — one very tiny, one large — are properly connected. If you would like a step-by-step guide, click here.

Unable to connect to the internet

The internet will not connect to any page. The WiFi icon has an x to show it’s not connected. There are no connections available to connect to.

WiFi adapter is missing drivers or has faulty drivers

Right click on the WiFi icon and click troubleshooting. If it has issues it will automatically reinstall the drivers. If no new drivers are available, uninstall them and restart your Chromebook.

Speakers are silent

Audio should be playing, but no sound comes out of the speakers.

Sound is disabled

Ensure that sound is enabled in Chrome OS. To do this, go to the bottom right of your screen, select “time”, and change the volume there.

Sound is coming from other devices

Disconnect any external audio device like headphones or speakers. If sound still does not come out of the Chromebook’s speakers, then refer to section below.

Speakers are unplugged

Remove the screws around the perimeter of the bottom of the Chromebook and underneath the rubber grips. Pry open the bottom of the Chromebook. Check if the speakers’ wires are connected. If you would like a step-by-step guide, click here.

Device will not hold a charge

No matter how long I let my Chromebook charge, the battery never fills up.

Charger not plugged into an outlet and/or into the Chromebook

Ensure that the charger is plugged into an outlet and that is plugged into the Chromebook.

Power jack is dirty or clogged

Look into your power jack (the part of the Chromebook where you plug the charger in) and check if it’s dirty. If it is, clean it with either compressed air or a clean cloth, then plug the charger into the power jack again.

Camera doesn’t work/shows a black screen

I need to use my camera in a program, but the camera doesn’t display anything.

Material blocking camera

Look at your camera and ensure that nothing is blocking it, like a piece of tape.

A bug is preventing the camera from working

Restart your Chromebook.

Program not given permission to use the Chromebook’s camera

Ensure that your current program is allowed to use your camera. If the program needs permission, go to the program’s settings, go to the camera section, and give the program permission to use your camera.

If individually giving programs permission to use the camera doesn’t work, go into Chrome OS’s settings and enable the use of cameras in programs there.
