Background
The Welch Allyn SureTemp 678 and 679 are part of the SureTemp series of clinical thermometers developed for use in professional healthcare settings. These devices are designed to provide rapid, reliable temperature readings while supporting infection control with disposable probe covers. They are commonly mounted on walls or mobile stands and used in environments where frequent patient temperature measurement is required.
A Class II recall was issued in September 2025 for certain oral/axillary probes used with SureTemp devices, including models 678 and 679, due to misprogramming that could result in lower-than-actual temperature readings and delayed fever detection.
The SureTemp 678 and 679 are considered discontinued (obsolete) products by the manufacturer, and official repair or service support is no longer available.
Identification
The Welch Allyn SureTemp 678 and 679 can be identified by a handheld thermometer unit connected to a coiled probe and a wall-mounted base. The device features a digital display and a wll for the probe to be stored when not in use. Blue probes are used for oral and axillary measurements, while red probes are used for rectal measurements. The model number can be found on a label on the back or underside of the unit.
