Initially, the car was marketed as the XV globally, and as the Crosstrek XV in the United States and Canada. In 2015 the XV was dropped for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, the third generation model was the first model marketed as the Crosstrek globally.
All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.
