Background
The Sidekick II was released in 2004 for T-Mobile customers, featuring a built in camera and an additional speaker, useful for speakerphone calls. It comes in a white body, with grey colored rubber bumpers, which are interchangeable for different colors through Sidekick II accessory retailers. Also, it has downloadable messenger programs from MSN, Yahoo and AOL. These features were all upgrades from the Sidekick II’s predecessor. T-Mobile replaced the Sidekick II with the Sidekick III nearly two years later, with more memory upgrade options and a faster operating system.
Identification
The Sidekick II can be identified primarily by its model number, which is located on the rear side of its swivel screen. The earlier Sidekick I is slightly larger and more rounded than the Sidekick II. The Sidekick I and II have a thumbwheel that can only toggle up and down, but the Sidekick III has a trackball, which is the easiest way to differentiate the earlier models from the later. There is also a sticker that comes on the back panel of the phone that reads “Sidekick II,” as well as on the rear side of the swivel screen.
