Generations
Kindle Paperwhite was announced on September 6, 2012. It provides a better reading experience than standard Kindle. It has a 6 inches 212 ppi e-ink display, four built-in LED backlight for lowlight reading. It was available in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G model.
In September 2013, Amazon announced second generation Kindle Paperwhite. It features a higher contrast Carta e-ink display, improved LED illumination, new 1GHz processor, and new software updates such as dictionary, wikipedia, X-Ray, Page-Flip.
In June 2015, third generation Kindle Paperwhite was announced, featuring new 300ppi Carta HD e-ink display, 4GB storage, and improved PDF display.
In October 2018, fourth generation Kindle Paperwhite was announced, featuring a flush screen design, five LEDs, 8GB and 32GB storage. It supports playback of Audible audio books, but only by paring Bluetooth headphones to the Kindle.
The fifth generation Kindle Paperwhite was released in September 2021. It features a larger 6.8 inches e-ink display and thinner bezels, 17 LEDs with warm light support, and USB-C charging port. This generation also has a higher cost "Signature Edition", with additional 32GB storage, auto brightness adjustment, and Qi wireless charging.
The most recent Kindle Paperwhite release was in October 2024. The six generation features a larger 7 inches e-ink display and thinner bezels, improved display contrast and speed.
