Background
The Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 is a fourth generation of the Kindle Fire series. It was released on October 21st, 2014. The number 8.9 refers to the screen size of 8.9 inches. Older generations of the Fire include the 10 and the 8, each with its respective screen sizes.
This model is more than just a different-sized screen. This model of the Amazon Fire has nearly twice the RAM. This allows the device to run programs at a much faster rate. Additionally, it has a light sensor to assist in photography as well as a 3 more mega pixels than previous generation cameras. The screen of the Fire HDX 8.9 is 2560px x 1600px, allowing the user to experience 1080p HD resolution.
Amazon has separated the Fire from the Kindle family. The Fire series is now a unique group of tablets and not considered part of the "Kindle" family.
The Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 was officially discontinued in 2015.
Identification
The Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 tablet weighs 375 g (Wi-Fi model) or 389 g (4G model) and measures 231 × 158 × 7.8 mm (9.09 × 6.22 × 0.31 in). It was available only in black. The Amazon logo is embossed in the center of the back case, and the model and serial numbers are printed near the bottom center of the device.
