HDD problem or firmware?

Hi, I bought a new 500gb toshiba hdd to replace the old ps3 hdd. I followed all the steps to install the official firmware, once the update is complete the ps3 stays on with the green light but the screen remains black. The 4 lights on the pad also turn on intermittently until they turn off after a couple of minutes. I tried to put back the old hdd and also installing the firmware and the play restarted without problems. Even if I try to install the firmware from the safe menu, the problem remains.

Is it a problem with the new hdd?
