How do you replace the charging port on this laptop?

My charger port is loose and I am unsure how to replace it. The laptop is a bit niche and its hard to find tutorials. I used the tutorial for the 5415 model to replace my fan when TSA broke it so I have all the tools, I just need a tutorial for the charger port. I have determined it isnt the charger and that the port is wiggly. Please help, I can't afford a replacement or service, but I can afford the part.

Hi @gertrude13230

Here's the service manual for the Inspiron 7425 2-in-1 laptop.

Go to p.44 to view the procedure to remove/replace the systemboard in the laptop

This is required to enable you to either re-solder the USB-C charge port¹ or to replace it if necessary. (supplier example only to show the part).

You will need smd soldering skills and tools to perform the task. Not easy to do if you're a novice as the port has numerous pin connections that are very close to each other. Here's an example video that shows what is involved when having to remove/replace smd components.

If doing this seems a bit daunting, perhaps if the USB-C connector is just loose and not damaged, disassemble the laptop and take the systemboard (handle with care) to a reputable, professional laptop repair service or mobile phone repair service and ask for a quote to solder it back onto the board.

If it is damaged, source a replacement USB-C connector and then once you have it, take it and the board and get a quote to remove/replace the original.

Doing either of the above should minimize the cost of the repair as the repairer doesn't have to disassemble or reassemble the laptop or source the required part if necessary, thereby saving time which would be (or should be) part of their price. Also they have the requisite tools and skills to perform the repair.

Since you are doing the disassembly/reassembly their guarantee would only be for their work and not anything else to do with the laptop.

¹ According to the setup and specifications guide for the laptop, it has 2 x USB-C ports on the left hand side (see p.6), either of which, if I'm reading it correctly should be able to charge the laptop as they both state, in part "Supports Power Delivery that enables two-way power supply between devices". Have you tried using the other USB-C port at all?

You are wonderful, is there any way you can tell me how, or give me the link to the service manual for an Inspiron 14 2-in-1 7425? I used the tutorial for the 5415 to replace my fan since this website doesn't have a page for a 7425, but I'm worried the charging port is different. After consulting the service manual for the 5415, I don't think the port tutorial is as interchangeable as the fan since they are in different spots.

I have amended my answer above. Hopefully this will be of some help.

I have attempted to use that second USB port with the charger the laptop came with and I have never been able to get it to work. Not since I received it, new out of the box. I am unsure if it is something I have to adjust my energy settings to do, but the charging light never comes on, nor does the charging icon appear in the lower right corner. I was hoping to avoid taking anything to a shop since I am pretty broke right now, but if I have to buy a soldering kit I may as well get some quotes. If you have any troubleshooting advice for the secondary port, I am all open, you have been an absolutely wonderful help.

Just out of my curiosity did you try turning the charger plug up the other way to see if the "non working' USB-C port started to charge? USB-C plugs are reversible i.e. they can be inserted either way. If it doesn't work one way, remove the charger plug from the laptop turn the plug upside down and reinsert.

Does the "non charging" USB-C port work when just trying to connect devices to the laptop e.g. mobile phone, portable HDDs, cameras etc and not just trying to use it as a charge port?

If you want to test the port to see if it works but just doesn't charge the laptop, be sure to use a device that has a USB-C cable plug requirement and not a micro USB cable plug as you don't want to plug in (or try to anyway) the wrong type of connector into the laptop.

See images of the different types of USB plugs, if you're not sure how to tell. Apologies if you know this already.

My apologies, I have been sick, I will trouble shoot this tomorrow after I rest and get back to you. I don't want you to think I've abandoned the thread. I have a double USB C charger cord lying around somewhere I can try to use, I also have some power banks I can try. All I know is I could never get it to charge from its stock charger.
